Here’s The Problem Skincare Buffs Have With Kylie Jenner’s New Skincare Line

A walnut scrub? In the Year of Our Lord 2019?

Over the weekend, Kylie Jenner announced that she was adding a skincare line to her beauty empire.

Called Kylie Skin, the range consists six products – a foaming face wash, vanilla milk toner, moisturiser, vitamin C serum, eye cream and a walnut face scrub.

Each product is said to be paraben-free, sulfate-free, vegan friendly, and suitable for all skin types.

The accompanying campaign shows Kylie looking fresh-faced and glowy, which is basically what you’d hope to look like after using Kylie Skin:

Naturally, though, there’s been a little skepticism. The Kardashian-Jenner sisters benefit from regular facials, plus access to the best dermatologists in the biz. No one entirely believes that you can get skin like Kylie’s from just using her products:

The real issue for skincare nerds, however, is the walnut facial scrub. In a short video about the product, Kylie says the scrub is “gentle enough to use every day”, but recommends using it two or three times a week.

She acknowledges that some walnut scrubs are “kinda harsh” on the skin, but hers is not too abrasive, and leaves her skin feeling baby soft.

But here’s the thing: Physical exfoliants like walnut scrubs have fallen out of favour in the beauty industry in recent years, with dermatologists claiming the granules can cause tiny tears in the skin, leading to infection if not cared for properly.

Skincare buffs are now mostly about chemical exfoliation with glycolic or lactic acid, which gently aid cell turnover, leaving skin smooth and bright.

That’s not to say all physical exfoliants are bad – used properly (meaning not scrubbing the hell out of your face every day, as the name implies) and with the right ingredients (like sugar or rice powder, for example), they can make your skin look brand new.

We’ll have to wait and see how gentle the Kylie Skin walnut scrub really is when it drops on May 22.
