5 Ways You’ve Been Using Your Beauty Blender All Wrong

Avoid these five mistakes to keep you from getting mould, tears, or stains in your prized beauty tool.

Nothing else compares to the beauty blender, right? But like any product, cult-status or not, you’ll only get prime results if you use it the right way – and it turns out that an awful lot of us are making some critical beautyblender mistakes. Lucky for you, we’ve  compiled a list of the major errors you could be making when using your favourite little sponge.

1. Using it dry

We get it, you didn’t read the instructions, but your little sponge of glory is supposed to be used wet. Yup, the damp surface gives you streak-free blending and a dewy finish. Basically, when it’s used dry, your product will go on heavier. As a rule of thumb, it should look airbrushed, not cakey.

2. Keeping it for too long

Even though you clean your sponge every day (right?), the Beautyblender needs to be replaced every three months. The older it gets, the more likely it will rip or tear (sob). Yep, even if you’re a dab hand at cleaning it. Soz. To make sure yours goes the distance, be extra gentle and use slight of hand when you’re cleaning it to keep rips and tears at bay. Got it?

3. Tossing it in your make-up bag

Don’t be the girl who gets bugs on your sponge. You should leave it out to completely dry after washing and before storing it away to avoid bacterial growth and mould, which can cause breakouts. Germs on something we’re rubbing on our faces on the daily? Er, no thanks.

4. Being too rough with it

Blending sponges are delicate and can tear quite easily if not handled with care. Make sure you’re blending with a soft squeezing motion, pinching it when needed. Also, be aware that sharp fingernails could tear it, and store it away from other beauty tools such as tweezers.

5. Only using the large one

Just like us, our blending sponges comes in all shapes and sizes. The mini blenders are, for starters, one of the most adorable things we’ve seen, and are amazing at applying your concealer without letting it set into the creases like a normal brush. The key to a flawless finish? Whichever blender you’re using, be sure to roll, not dab it over the area you’re blending.
