How to Create A Capsule Wardrobe in 5 Easy Steps

Er, so what exactly is a capsule wardrobe, you might be asking. Well, it’s a small, timeless collection of clothes – around 30 or so pieces to be precise – that all work together and won’t go out of fashion. Yep, that means simplify rather than bulk buy, and the best bit is that not only do you save a ton of cash in the long run (hurrah!), you also have the perfect outfit to hand no matter the occasion.

Sounds good, right? Want one? We asked our Fashion Ed Linda Conway how to create the ultimate capsule collection.

1. Know what you need

Not sure what to buy? “A modern capsule wardrobe should include a great pair of skinny jeans, ankle boots, a leather jacket, basic well fitting, block colour tees, a good day bag and a show-stopping clutch,” recommends Linda. “A great pair of heels is also a must,” she adds. Linda’s styling tip? “These pieces can be mixed and matched with accessories like jewellery or scarves so you’ll find yourself reinventing your look every other day with just a few pieces.” We’re writing it down.

2. Be ruthless

We’ll bet you’ve already got a few staple items hiding behind all those impulse Penneys purchases, so it’s time for a major chucking out sesh. “I’m a firm believer in the 12 month rule,” says Linda. “If you’ve no intention of wearing something as the appropriate season rolls around, ditch it.”

3. Buy less

“Rich cottons, cashmere mixes and silk may carry a heavier price tag but in the long run you’re 100% going to get more bang for your buck,” instructs our fashion editor. Yep, there’s nothing we love more than raiding the sale rail, but a capsule wardrobe’s about buying quality not quantity. 4. Consider your colours

As a rule of thumb, keep your basic items neutral. “These are the colours you’ll be able to mix loads with,” says Linda. “While a neon floral coat as a staple may seem like a good idea at the time, it won’t be the piece you’ll turn to for every other occasion.” So it’s basic, block colours for maximum versatility then? Got it.

5. Know your style

A capsule wardrobe doesn’t have to be boring! “Add your own stamp,” Linda suggests. “Whether that’s through accessories or make-up, don’t let basics hold you back from showing your personal style.” Permission to buy that kitty clutch/burgundy lippy, granted.
