Dublin is one of many international cities that celebrated Gay Pride Day this month, with hundreds of cities doing the same internationally each year.

The idea of an annual Gay Pride Day is something that dates back to the early 1970s, and it’s always been seen as a celebration and liberation of sexual diversity.

But one Twitter user seems to have misinterpreted the very basis of Gay Pride, by introducing a hashtag which has been trending all day, largely due in part to its complete and utter ridiculousness: #HeterosexualPrideDay.

According to the folks at The New Civil Rights Movement, the hashtag was first shared by a Twitter user who goes only by Sam. His first use of the tag was on June 15th, here, in response to a question about why straight people attend Pride parades.

However this morning, the tag began trending, and it soon (understandably) got people very riled up indeed:

As for Sam, he’s spent the day defending his corner, but something tells us he’s fighting a losing battle.

Time to call it quits, Sam.
