One of the best things about Irish stars rising to the top of the Hollywood A-list brigade is that all of our Irish colloquialisms finally start getting the attention they deserve.

Last awards season we had Saoirse Ronan’s mam telling reporters at the Oscars that she was doing “grand,” and now we have Ruth Negga flying the flag for Ireland too. The Irish-Ethiopian actress’s face is everywhere at the moment thanks to her role in Jeff Nichols’ Loving, and she appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! last night for a post-Golden Globes debrief.

How was the awards ceremony? “Great craic,” according to Ruth, though she admitted she “can’t cope” with Donald Trump calling Meryl “overrated”.

The current US Vogue covergirl said she was still reeling after getting a personal shout-out from Meryl on stage at the Globes, even though Ms. Streep DID initially say she had grown up in London rather than Dublin. “I’m still sort of floating from that. I haven’t absorbed it. When will I ever absorb it?” she said of the unexpected namecheck.

There were only two channels, and they didn’t start on Saturdays until midday, so you’d be staring at your TV waiting for midday,” she recalled, when Jimmy asked about what TV shows Irish people love to watch.

Someone send a UPC multichannel box to the Negga household, STAT.
