Sorry, But Your Selfies Really Aren’t As Hot As You Think They Are

At least that's what science says anyway.

Kim Kardashian Taking A Selfie

If we’re all being completely honest, when it comes to snapping selfies, it takes in the region of 50 (plus?) attempts before we find one we’re happy enough to post on social media.

It hides that awful zit on your chin, diminishes your eye bags from last night’s partying and legit makes you look better than you actually do in real life, but new research says that your amaze-o new selfie really isn’t as perfect as you think it is.

You see, researchers at University of Toronto enlisted 198 college students and asked them to compare photos they’d taken of themselves, with photos of them taken by another person. Each student was then told to rate their photos based on how well they might be received on social media.

These same photos were then ranked by 178 members of the public in terms of likeablity, attractiveness and narcissism.

The results? All of the selfie takers thought their pics were more likeable and attractive than they were perceived by the public.

“Selfie-takers generally over-perceived the positive attributes purveyed by their selfies,” write the study’s researchers. “Here, we found that selfie-takers believed their selfies to look more attractive and likable than photos of them taken by other people. In reality, though, external raters actually perceived the targets’ selfies to look less attractive and less likable than the photos taken by others (as well as more narcissistic).”

Really though, it’s all about the way you view yourself, and not other people’s perceptions. So if you can look at a selfie and think that you look hot as hell, then we reckon that’s pretty deadly.
