Do you go left or right? One's romantic and the other isn't.
In the words of Cher’s 1991 hit The Shoop Shoop Song, ‘if you wanna know if he loves you so, it’s in his kiss.”
Turns out Cher wasn’t too far off the mark with that statement as researchers at the University of Saskatchewan recently discover that the way we kiss really can give away some crucial info about our relationships.
In particular, it can reveal just how romantic you and your beau are. Aww.
In the study, which analysed hundreds of images of couples kissing and then compared them to family members sharing a non-romantic peck, they found that loved-up couples always tilted their heads toward the right, while kissing relatives headed left.
Lead researcher Jennifer Sedgewick explains the science bit. “Your brain is split into two halves: the left and right hemisphere. Activity on one side makes us focus on (or move toward) the opposite side.”
So what’s all this got to do with kissing?
Basically, as the right side of our brain is the emotional centre, we tend to display more emotion on the left side of our faces. This means that when we kiss our partners, we tilt to the right, because we’re subconsciously showing them our more emotive side.
Thankfully, there’s no need to freak out if you’re fella always tilts to the left when he goes in for the shift. This doesn’t mean he sees you as a sister. The researchers explain that there are many other things that can influence the direction in which we tilt, such as being left-handed for example.
