Anne Hathaway Has Pre-Emptively Shut Down Anyone Trying To Shame Her For Gaining Weight

"It's not me, it's you."

We live in a culture where celebrity bodies are very closely scrutinised by the paparazzi and the tabloids – and if you happen to live in one of those celebrity bodies, you’re probably extra-conscious of any changes or gains.

This culture has prompted Anne Hathaway to declare in advance that she is gaining weight for a role, and that she’s not here for any crude headlines or red circles or concern trolling.

Alongside a timelapse video of her training in the gym shared on Instagram, she wrote:

I am gaining weight for a movie role and it is going well. To all the people who are going to fat shame me in the upcoming months, it’s not me, it’s you. Peace xx. PS: I wanted to set this to Queen’s Fat Bottomed Girls but copyright said no. Continued peace xx

The actress has form in getting ahead of internet chatter – she broke the news of her pregnancy herself when she spotted paparazzi taking pictures of her on the beach:

If this kind of photo is going to be out in the world it should at least be an image that makes me happy (and be one that was taken with my consent. And with a filter).

Then after giving birth, she spoke about her reluctance to buy into the ‘post-baby body’ BS. “There is no shame in gaining weight during pregnancy (or ever),” she wrote. “There is no shame if it takes you longer than you think it will to lose the weight (if you want to lose it at all).”

It’s a shame that she feels she has to, but we’re glad she’s calling it out. You do you, Anne!
