7 Things You Need To Know Before You Have Sex On Your Period

Don't write it off; having sex during your period can be seriously satisfying, and it doesn't have to be a messy affair either...

Period Sex

Sure, sex when the painters are in can sometimes be a messy situation. But while we get caught up in the “ew, blood” factor, or the demise of our beloved 500-count Egyptian cotton sheet set, hear us out, there are some surprising things you need to know before you get down and dirty while you’re in the midst of Aunt Flo’s monthly visit. Although, be warned it ain’t for the faint hearted.

Some handy tips if you’re getting hot and heavy during your lady flow:

• Before having sex, spread a dark towel on the bed.

• Use a latex condom so that some of the blood that gets on him can be easily rolled off.

• Keep a warm, wet washcloth or towel nearby.

• Try different positions. Lying on your back or side will be less messy than going at it on top.

1. It will itch that horny scratch

Period sex offers the sweet release of sexual frustration during an especially turned on time of the month. Instead of spending three to seven days feeling sexually frustrated and totally gross, wouldn’t you rather be doing it with your man and easing the mental misery your period often brings?

2. Your immune system will thank you

As if casually bleeding while you’re in an important meeting or on a date isn’t bad enough, our periods make us more vulnerable to infection and viruses. #notfair. Lucky for us, having sex can boost our immune system by creating antibodies that help ward off colds. Don’t have to tell us twice…

3. You might like it — a lot

Arousal is different for every woman, but for some, menstruation could actually be a turn-on of sorts, that’s because your estrogen and testosterone start to rise by day three of your flow, and we are known to be feeling a little randier around this time. Plus, your monthly visitor can serve as extra lubrication during sex, which equals more pleasure. Don’t mock it until you’ve tried it!

4. You can minimise the mess

We recommend having sex in the missionary position, with the you on your back,  this can also limit blood flow (thanks, gravity!), as can having sex toward the end of your period, when your flow is lighter. Let’s be honest, sex during that time of the month can still wreak some heavy duty havoc if you don’t take precautions to keep the collateral damage to a minimum. (You know, like, towels.)

5. Don’t forget protection

Ladies don’t be fooled; you can still get pregnant if you have sex while surfing the crimson wave. Sperm can live for up to three to five days, so don’t chance the dance without protection. Because the cervix is more open during this time of the month, you have a slightly higher risk of infection from exposure to a sexually transmitted disease during unprotected sex. Also, wearing a condom can make the clean up easier—for your partner, at least.

6. Say goodbye to cramps

Just to really drive this point home, if you experience cramps that are hard to relieve with painkillers and anti-inflammatory meds, schedule some sexy time. Although this doesn’t work for everyone and some women experience additional discomfort, you’ll never know until you try it, and, at the very least, you’ll be trying a natural, perfectly safe alternative instead of loading up on pricey medicine.

7. Headaches no more

Period sex won’t just relieve nasty cramps, either. For those of you who suffer from period migraines, it’s worth considering that the endorphins that are released during climax are so similar to morphine that period sex can act as a pain-reliever for those stubborn headaches. Enough said really.
