How I Got My Job: Anne Nuding, PR Executive

How did you start out in PR?

My very good friend James recommended me for a position.

Did you always want to work in this area?

I always wanted to work in a creative field, although I wasn’t always sure exactly how.

Did your previous experience help?

I was the Press Officer for an American fashion retailer before and I made invaluable contacts while there, which has definitely helped me.

What does a typical day look like in your job?

It really can be very different day to day. One day I’ll be co-ordinating a photo-call, the next an event, the next liaising with the media.

What challenges have you experienced?

When you first start out it’s challenging because no one knows who you are.

How have you dealt with these experiences?

By not being shy, introducing myself to people at events and really making an effort to make an impression.

What have been some career highlights?

The Magnum Mini Screenings hosted by Louise Thompson was a career highlight for me as it was the first campaign I took lead on, and thankfully it was a resounding success.

When you first start out it’s challenging because no one knows who you are.

What’s the best bit about your job?

The variety and fast pace.

And the drawbacks?

The long and unsociable hours can be tough although I usually don’t mind, it goes with the territory and I understand that.

What’s been the key to your success?

Hard work, drive and keeping a cool head.

What advice would you give to anyone looking to follow in your footsteps?

Don’t be shy!

What’s the earning potential?

If you work hard enough it can get very high. [You can earn anything from €15k a year as an entry-level graduate right up to €100k as a divisional director.]

What sort of career progression is there?

Considering the Managing Director of the UK branch of my agency started out as an intern, I’d say it’s very promising!
