8 Podcasts You Need In Your Life

Elle Gordon suggests some easy listening to rid you of those winter blues!

It’s that time of year when a duvet comes into its own. Although a wondrous item year-round, suddenly in the winter months, it seems to develop an allure that makes it feel almost impossible to leave it. But leave it we must. And so we peel ourselves off the bed and attempt with one eye open and painfully messy hair to do the mad dash that is getting dressed when it is still dark outside. Whether racing to work or determinedly putting in time for the exercise, listening to a podcast is always a good idea.

BlindBoy

Hosted by Blindboy Boatclub of the Rubberbandits, the topics range from current news to interviews and comedy to ramblings, the direction of which you might wonder about but soon find yourself enthralled. Blindboy somehow manages to put into words what you are thinking as you listen, and of course, he is as ever a passionate advocate for mental health in Ireland. A must-listen.

The High Low

Hosted by UK based Journalists Dolly Alderton and Pandora Sykes, the High Low is a weekly current affairs and pop culture podcast. Inspired by Vanity Fair Editor Tina Brown who coined the term ‘high low journalism’ in the 80s to denote an amalgamation of water- cooler gossip and hard-hitting cultural happenings, The High Low covers both the trivial and the political in a light and conversational manner that will have you hooked.

Desert Island Discs

It shocks me when people say, ‘Desert Island what?’ A prolific podcast version of the radio show that first began in 1942, this is a one-on-one interview style with extraordinary people who have excelled in their chosen fields, from A-list celebrities, to surgeons to authors, with seven tracks of music mixed throughout, – the tracks you would take with you if stranded on a desert island – With thousands of past interviews and new ones constantly en route. All of your heroes have been on there. George Clooney, Tom Hanks, Davina McCall. Superb.

Happy Place

This Podcast equates to a warm cup of soup on a dreary day. Think an easy light chat hosted by Fearne Cotton in which she talks to fabulous people she knows, like Dawn French and Emma Wills, on finding happiness in the most simple of places. The topics covered included bereavement, loss, divorce, beauty standards and covers everything that life throws at us, giving a great insight into being in the throes of it… and continuing anyway.

Wobble

Hosted by Jules Von Hep and Sarah Powell, this podcast is all about happiness (because let’s be honest there is always room for more) and body confidence in which they feature a series of fascinating guests along the way.

Mother Of Pod

Hosted by homegrown talent, Sophie White and Jen O’Dwyer this podcast chronicles parenting highs and lows, in a frank and hilarious manner. Their no-holding-back approach is a refreshing look at parenting and will be a great comfort to new parents but also, non- parents are welcome and it’s a good one to give you a bit of an insight on what to expect.

The Real Health

Hosted by personal trainer Karl Henry. This podcast features some inspiring guests to keep you on track to be the healthiest and happiest version of yourself. From mental strength to veganism, to handy motivational tips, to Dermot Bannon giving us the oul insight on what he whips up in the kitchen. This is such a helpful one for anyone who knows what they need to do in terms of general wellbeing but wouldn’t mind a helpful nudge along the way.

The Glow Up

Hosted by STELLAR’S Editor in Chief Vicki Notaro and Online Editor Valerie Loftus. This beautiful podcast (literally) is looking at beauty and hair products and the impact they have on our lives. You all remember what perfume you were wearing the day that ‘x’ happened or smear on a strong red lip on a day when you need to feel powerful, so this really is a fascinating listen… if we do say so ourselves. The debut is en route and trust us… you’re not going to be able to tear those ears away.
