Here’s What’s Going On With Britney Spears And The #FreeBritney Movement

Confused about the whole situation? We've got you covered.

Earlier this month, news came to light that Britney Spears had checked herself into a mental health facility.

The decision to enter the facility came just three months after the singer announced that she was taking an indefinite hiatus from work to devote all of her time to caring for her father who recently suffered from a ruptured colon and allegedly “almost died.” The decision to enter the facility was allegedly made by Britney herself who, at the time the mental health rumours were circulating, wrote this on Instagram:

We all need to take time for a little ‘me time’

So where did the #FreeBritney hashtag you’re seeing all over Twitter come from, then? Well, it’s all a big conspiracy, basically.

It all started when the singer began posting less frequently to Instagram – which fans thought to be weird seeing as she is known for her inspirational quotes and mom vids.

Then, people got even more suspicious when the podcast Britney’s Gram dropped what they dubbed a “special emergency episode” on SoundCloud, complete with an allegation regarding the supposed true nature of Britney’s voluntary treatment.

Saying that they’d received “an anonymous tip from a credible source,” the podcast hosts played a voicemail from someone claiming to have been a paralegal working with an attorney connected to Britney’s conservatorship with her father, Jamie Spears. The source alleged that Britney had entered treatment against her will.

According to E!, the unidentified voice in the voicemail said: “What is happening is disturbing, to say the least. Basically, Britney was in rehearsals for Domination. It came to Jamie’s [Britney’s dad] attention that Britney was not taking her medication as prescribed. She was missing a lot of doses and just full-on not taking them.

“So they got her to the doctor and the doctor said, ‘OK, if you don’t want these medications, let’s get you on a new one.’ She refused to take the new one. Jamie said, ‘Either you take this medication or the show’s off, and I’m pulling my support and you can’t do it.’ Britney did not follow Jamie’s instructions, so he was true to his word—he pulled the show, he verbatim said, ‘Blame it on my illness.'”

According to the anonymous caller, whose identity the podcast hosts claim to have verified, Britney’s allegedly been in treatment for a lot longer than we’ve been told.

“Britney has been in the mental facility since mid-January. There is no timeline, there is no end date particularly in sight for this stay at this mental facility to end. She did not want to go,” he claimed. “From what I understand, this is not a decision she made, at all.”

The source claimed that Britney didn’t enter the facility by choice, and thus the hashtag #FreeBritney was born.

If that doesn’t seem legit to you, Britney’s mam – Lynne Spears, has been spotted on social media liking comments from fans who’ve directly referenced the theory that Britney’s been forced into treatment against her will.

“I really hope you are supporting Britney in trying to end [her] conservatorship,” read one comment. “I really hope your ailing ex husband isn’t keeping your daughter somewhere against her will.”

Despite these rumours, Britney appears to be permitted to come and go from the facility as she pleases. Earlier this month, E! reported that she’d been spotted at a Los Angeles-area hair salon, getting her roots and extensions retouched. “She seemed fine and content… [She] was definitely excited to her hair done,” an eyewitness said.

Then, on Easter Sunday just gone, she and her boyfriend Sam were spotted at the Montage Beverly Hills Hotel where an eyewitness told E! the couple spent a “relaxing day.”

“She had a small smile and just looked chill, like she got to get away from things for a little while and enjoyed a normal day with her boyfriend,” they reported.

People are taking the #FreeBritney movement so far that today they have been protesting on the streets of West Hollywood with signs reading “Free Britney”, demanding that the singer be released from the mental health facility where they say she is being held against her will.

Fans Barbara Gray and Tess Barker, who run the Britney’s Gram podcast where the original claims were made, attended the event, although they claim to not be the organisers.

“We’re here trying to expose the #FreeBritney movement and let everyone know something severely wrong is going on,” Barbara explained to ET. “She’s been in a conservatorship for over 10 years that we don’t believe she should be in any longer and we’re trying to spread awareness of it.”

Since then, Britney’s sister Jamie Lynn Spears has broken her silence on the conspiracy.

In response to fans who attacked her on Twitter, Jamie shared a vide proving her loyalty to Britney. “10 years ago, who was there??” she wrote alongside the clip. “I have been here long before anyone else and I’ll be here long after. I love my sister with everything I have. So anyone or anything that speaks to the contrary can GTFOH with all the comments about what you don’t understand.”

She also added, “Don’t come for me or the ones I love anymore. You can move the ‘blank’ outta here with all that, just like this other lady who was running her mouth.”

Essentially, nobody knows for sure how Britney feels about being in the mental health facility other than her. Maybe we should actually take some advice from Chris Crocker and just leave her alone once and for all.
