There has been a surge in complaints.

A total of 33 complaints have been made to Ireland’s advertising watchdog about Irish influencers, The Journal reports. Last year, the number of complaints filed was only 11, meaning the number has tripled in the past year.

Speaking of the news, the ASAI’s chief executive Oral Twomey explained that a number of Irish influencers were being investigated as a result.

“It is likely in this area that we will have more adjudications,” Twomey told The Journal. “People might complain about material but it ultimately might not be marketing communication, so not all of those would be something we would investigate. It’s a broad mix.

Twomey did not reveal which influencers are currently being investigated but did say the number included a mix of bloggers, Snapchatters and Instagram stars.

“Some of it is relating to whether or not affiliate links are being disclosed or if the blog itself is a marketing communication, whether that’s being disclosed. Some relate to posts or snaps on Snapchat, or posts on Instagram,” she explained.

The outcome of these investigations are due to be announced in mid to late August.
