Nina Dobrev Said She and Paul Wesley ‘Despised Each Other’ During The Vampire Diaries

We're shook.

Remember around 2008/2009 when the world was OBSESSED with vampires? There was Twilight, True Blood, and of course The Vampire Diaries.

If you were a fan of the latter, you were probably just as obsessed with on/off couple Elena Gilbert and Stefan Salvatore played by Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley. And while it may have been convincing, they were just very good actors.

Nina Dobrev dropped a bombshell this week when she revealed that they not only didn’t get on, but actually despised each other. That’s intense.

“Paul and I didn’t get along at the beginning of the show. I respected Paul Wesley, but I didn’t like Paul Wesley,” she put it bluntly on podcast Directionally Challenged!

“Everyone would walk up to me after the show and be like, ‘are you and Paul dating in real life?'” she revealed.

“Everyone thought that we had such good chemistry from the show. But I realize now that there’s a fine line between love and hate, and we despised each other so much that it read as love but…”

Looks like hate can look a lot like passion.

Before you throw out your box set, you’ll be happy to know that this rift was only really for the first season.

“We really just didn’t get along the first five months of shooting,” she reassured.

Thankfully, Nina and Paul ended up getting on well in the end and are now actually great friends. Phew!

She also revealed that a lot of her celeb pals have said that they hated their on-screen love interests too. But she wouldn’t name names!

“That ends up reading as really intense chemistry,” she explained.

“We ended up getting to a good place and it was fine. Of everyone, I think I probably see him the most and hang out with him the most. We’re probably the closest. We hang out a lot. We’re really good friends. I love his wife.”

It’s so funny how time changes everything because I never thought he would be one of my best friends.”

Remember kids: First impressions aren’t always accurate.

It’s currently on Netflix if you want to get back into your obsession with the show, though we doubt you could watch the first season in the same way ever again thanks to Nina’s confession.
