New Mamma Mia Trailer Leaves Us Asking One VERY Important Question

Where in the name of God is Meryl?!

Universal Pictures have made our Thursday after releasing a brand new official trailer for the second Mamma Mia film, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.

The original trailer revealed that Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) is pregnant and that we’re going to learn a lot more about her mother Donna’s (Meryl Streep) past. However, one thing from the original trailer that stood out to fans of the film was the apparent lack of Meryl Streep’s character – gasp!

So has the beloved character of Donna been killed off? Unfortunately, today’s latest trailer seems to insinuate just that.

Other than the fact that Meryl is absent from the trailer other than in flashbacks, everyone is continuously talking about her in the past tense.

One thing we can breathe a sigh of relief about is that the rest of the original cast can be seen back together again, including Julie Walters, Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan, Stellan Skarsgård, Christine Baranski and Dominic Cooper.

The original cast will also be joined by some new stars, including Lily James, who will play a younger Donna as we hear all about her journey to meet her three suitors and raise a child alone. Music legend Cher also appears in the trailer as Donna’s mother, and has confirmed her role on Twitter saying “WELL… IM IN MOMMA MIA2”.

From the new trailer we can guess that the film will follow a prequel/sequel hybrid plot and show us Sophie’s journey and struggles as she prepares to become a mother, and also how Donna coped when she was in the same position years previously.

Now before we lose all hope, Meryl is confirmed for the second film and she has been spotted on set, so we will be seeing her in one way or another, be it through a new storyline or in flashback scenes.

We’ll just have to wait till July to find out! Until then, you can satisfy your Mamma Mia cravings with this first-look trailer and also a featurette.
