It’s Gonna Be A Sunny Weekend – Here Are The Best Places To Have A Picnic

We love a picnic, so we've shared our favourite places to lay down a rug, and chow down.

Confession: team STELLAR loves a picnic. Oh yeah, we might have notions of red checked blankets and wicker baskets packed with pristine porcelain and silver flatware, when the reality is a plastic bag of goodies from M&S, but heck, who cares? The best picnics are about lazing about in the sun with good friends and fam, enjoying nibbly treats and just kicking back when you can.

So, given that the weather’s finally playing ball, we decided to pay a little homage to our fave weekend picnic spots. Do you like any? Let us know below – and don’t be afraid to add yours too.

Linda Conway, fashion editor

“I’m a big fan of the People’s Park in Dun Laoghaire. I head to M&S, pick up a salad, get a takeout coffee and then I’ll head down to Teddy’s afterwards for a cone. Of course!”

Best of the rest

Here’s where else we love to picnic.

  • Kennedy Park, Co Wexford
  • The Iveagh Gardens, Co Dublin
  • Powerscourt, Co Wicklow
  • The Ring of Kerry (like, all of it)
  • Doolin, Co Clare
  • Florencecourt House, Co Fermangh

Rosemary Mac Cabe, deputy editor

“About once a year I head into the Phoenix Park and take along some crusty bread and good cheese. I’d bring a mature gouda, some St Tola goats cheese and maybe some Crozier Blue. Oh, and I’d pick up a bottle of Pimm’s at The Drink Store in Stoneybatter on my way.”

Katie Gilligan, junior designer

“It’s Malahide Park for me. It’s near where I’m from, it’s really spacious, right by the sea and really nice. Plus there are always loads of dogs! I’ll nip into the Avoca beside it, get a superfood salad and a couple of Cokes and just relax.”

Michelle O’Brien, staff writer

“I love picnicking in Castle Park in Kilkenny. I go over to the Design Centre across from it and buy coffee and these delicious handmade scones they do. The park’s an oasis in the middle of the built-up city and it’s just sort of healthy and stress-free. You get a different perspective when you’re surrounded by all the history.”
