Chris Hemsworth is one of Hollywood’s biggest hunks atm, but it seems he won’t be gracing our screens for quite a while.

The Australian actor has decided to step back from performing, wanting to spend more time with his wife, Elsa Pataky and their children, 10-year-old India and 8-year-old twins Tristan and Sasha.

As for what prompted the big life change, Chris opened up about a recent health scare, which left him wanting to prioritise family time above all else.

In his new docuseries Limitless, Chris discovered he has a genetic makeup which leaves him with an increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s Disease, a brain disorder which impacts memory.

Limitless focuses on aging slower, and in one episode Chris takes a genetic test, and discovers he has two copies of the gene APOE4, which has been linked to an increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s Disease. Chris has first-hand knowledge of life with Alzheimer’s, as his grandfather actually suffers from it.

Opening up to Vanity Fair, Chris revealed the news was a massive wake-up call.

Saying: “It really triggered something in me to want to take some time off,”

“And since we finished the show, I’ve been completing the things I was already contracted to do. Now when I finish this tour this week, I’m going home and I’m going to have a good chunk of time off and just simplify. Be with the kids, be with my wife.”

However, Chris was also quick to stress that he received a warning, not a diagnosis, emphasising how throughout the episode he discovers there are preventative measures he, and others, may take.

Explaining: “It was a really good catalyst to dive into everything I needed to be doing in either the prevention front or the management front or however you want to classify it.”

“It’s not a pre-deterministic gene, but it is a strong indication. Ten years ago, I think it was more thought of as determinant.”
