Why I’m Not Delighted That Carrie And Aidan Are Back On

When it's not Big, it's Aidan.

Okay, who else saw this coming?

The internet is going wild after Sarah Jessica Parker posted a picture of herself kissing John Corbett, aka Aidan Shaw, on set of season two of AJLT, letting fans know their romance is back on all these years later.

When I saw the picture, I couldn’t help but eyeroll. The reunion just seemed very predictable, and the love triangle between herself, Mr Big and Aidan is just exhausted. Of course, it will no longer be a triangle as Mr Big passed away during season one of AJLT, but Aidan coming back to be Carrie’s rebound once again isn’t the true love story some are seeing it as – and it isn’t a big surprise either. I just can’t help but wish that if Carrie was to find love again, she’d find a new love and close old chapters.

If you’re a fan of the original Sex And The City you know that over the duration of the series and the films (yes, we are including them here) Carrie Bradshaw has had two great loves, Mr Big, and Aidan Shaw.

Mr Big was the somewhat forbidden love, the one she wasn’t supposed to want because he wasn’t the best for her, (who remembers the wedding?) but so desperately did. The pair were drawn together time and time again, no matter what either of them did to one another they found their way back.

And although Carrie and Big were the most iconic love story in the series, when it wasn’t Big, it was Aidan.

Aidan was the good love for Carrie, he was everything she wanted Big to be, although he wasn’t him. Aidan was good, kind, caring and Carrie wasn’t that welcoming to it. When he proposed she wore the engagement ring around her neck and not her finger so it was “close to her heart,” she said. Sounds to me like you don’t want the ring Carrie, let’s not lead the man on.


When they were together she invited Mr Big to the cabin in the woods, that Aidan brought her to! She told him if he wants her, he has to be okay with Big (her ex with whom she also cheats on Aidan) in her life. Excuse me?!

Eventually, inevitably, Carrie and Aidan call it quits for good, Aidan gets married and has a family and I was delighted for him. That’s what he deserved, not to be constant second string. When it wasn’t Big, it was Aidan.

But alas, we are brought to the second SATC film (many argue we should just ignore the films because they are a bit mad, but in this case we aren’t ignoring, we plough on). In the second film, Carrie and Big are together and adjusting to married life. But, is she happy with that? Nope, Carrie meets Aidan while away in Abu Dhabi and kisses him, while married to Big. When I tell you that I shouted at the screen.

Aidan never seemed like the kind to be involved in an affair, but here he was kissing Carrie, while being married and a father of three. I was frustrated for what this could mean for Big and Carrie, again, and what this meant about Aidan as a character which has now been flipped from the really good guy he was presented as. What about your WIFE? sir.


Well, the pair left it at that and Carrie and Big made it through another obstacle bringing them into the first season of AJLT right up until Big’s shocking death. This leaves Carrie single for the remainder of the first season, and with season two approaching Carrie may be ready to date, and of course, who is about to pop back into her life? Only Aidan!

When it’s not Big, it’s Aidan. Now, it can’t be big, so it’s Aidan.

We expect we will find out about what happened to Aidan’s marriage, and he will once again be pure delighted to be Carrie’s second choice. If Big was still here would Carrie be choosing Aidan? No.


In my opinion Aidan was never treated right, and I feel like his friends probably would warn him off going there again. But the heart wants what it wants and once the reboot was announced it was only a matter of time before he popped up again. If Carrie sticks with Aidan this time, that would make her a step mother, something we didn’t think we’d see from Ms Bradshaw, so for that dynamic alone, I would be interested to see the reunion.

I just can’t help but wonder if the pair can withstand any more obstacles, let’s hope it’s a smooth ride.
