A Beloved Sex Education Star Won’t Be Returning For Season 5
Fans of Netflix series Sex Education have been eagerly awaiting the fourth instalment of the series, to see our favourite characters take to the screen and solve their peers’ problems while tackling the turmoil of teenage life.
Unfortunately the Sex Education family will be losing a fan favourite prior to season 5. Emma Mackey has confirmed that she will not be returning for season 5 of the hit Netflix show.
The news of Emma’s departure comes soon after Ncuti Gatwa who portrays Eric Effiong announced his departure from the show following the completion of season 4. His upcoming role sees him take on the role of the 15th Doctor in the BBC’s award-winning series Doctor Who.
Gatwa and Mackey are also set to act alongside each other and Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling and Simu Liu in the long awaited Greta Gerwig Barbie movie.
27-year-old Mackey took home the BAFTA’s Rising Star award this past Sunday at the 2023 ceremony, an honour that has been bestowed upon some of the world’s leading actors. The award was presented to her for her work in Sex Education, Death on the Nile, Eiffel and Emily.

Following her win, media asked if she was excited for season 5 to which she responded: “Season five of Sex Education? Bloody hell, I’ve just finished the fourth one, love — last week! No, I don’t think so. I’ve said goodbye to Maeve. So it’s a happy goodbye.”
Ncuti Gatwa showed his utmost support for his Sex Education family posting a picture on his Instagram story of himself, Emma Mackey, Asa Butterfield and Aimee Lou Woods captioning it: “Couldn’t be prouder or more in love with each of these human beings! The way we SQUEEZED each other for about five minutes on sight”.
While fans will be heartbroken to say goodbye to Maeve but it seems Mackey has made peace with her decision to leave the show to move on to new roles.
Since filming finished early last week it can be presumed that we will see the arrival of the series’ 5th instalment to Netflix sometime in the Autumn of 2023. We can’t wait to see Maeve on our screens for one last time.
