Will The Weeknd’s Controversial Show The Idol, Be Returning For Season 2?
We have so many questions!
Whether you watched it or chose not to, the chances are you heard a lot about the controversial goings on in The Weeknd’s HBO series The Idol. The well known music star created the concept for the show alongside Euphoria director Sam Levinson and Reza Fahim.
The five episode series follows Jocelyn (Lily Rose Depp), an aspiring pop idol in the aftermath of a nervous breakdown.
Due to this she’s forced to cancel her world tour and the series begins with her attempting to make her way back from this and reclaim her status as America’s popstar of the moment.

Jocelyn gets involved in a complicated relationship with the leader of a new-age cult or a self proclaimed self-help guru called Tedros (Abel ‘The Weeknd’ Tesfaye).
The series was slammed immediately for its high level of graphic content and overtly sexual scenes, to which The Weeknd later responded saying “there’s nothing sexy about it”.
He continued saying: “When we use Basic Instinct as a reference, we’re using Verhoeven. Verhoeven is the king of ’90s satire thrillers — yes, there’s moments of ‘sexy’ in his films but there are other moments that are very cheesy and hilarious.”

He later added: “However you’re feeling watching that scene, whether it’s discomfort, or you feel gross, or you feel embarrassed for the characters. It’s all those emotions adding up to: This guy is in way over his head, this situation is one where he is not supposed to be here.”
HBO have finally announced whether they will be moving forward with a season two of the show – it’s a resounding no.
A spokesperson for the platform told Page Six: “The Idol was one of HBO’s most provocative original programs, and we’re pleased by the strong audience response. After much thought and consideration, HBO, as well as the creators and producers have decided not to move forward with a second season. We’re grateful to the creators, cast, and crew for their incredible work.”
