5 Spicy, Tension Filled Period Dramas While You Wait For More Bridgerton Season 3

Can't wait? Us neither

via Netflix

Bridgerton has launched its latest season in two parts split by major cliffhangers.

If you’re anything like us over here at Stellar, you’ve binge watched the first part of the addictive drama in one sitting already. But hold tight, the anticipated arrival of the second part is set to be released on June 13th.

We can’t help but secretly be grateful as this slower rollout avoids major spoilers being broadcasted all over our timelines. But still, are you still craving more drama, spicy tension and medieval garments?

We have compiled a list of tension filled period piece films to fill that Bridgerton shaped hole in your heart whilst you eagerly await the rest of this obsessive new season.

Pride and Prejudice (2005)

Based on the second novel by Jane Austen, this piece takes place in the eighteenth century. Mr & Mrs Bennett are eager to find a satisfactory marriage for their daughters. They are delighted to have discovered Charles Bingley, an eligible wealthy bachelor that has just moved in.

The rest unfolds through an alluring love triangle. This movie has a lot of spicy tension, and the build up to the notorious final kiss scene is definitely worth the wait.

Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019)

This French eighteenth century sapphic romance film tells the story of Marianne and Heloise, an artist and her subject.

Upon being beckoned to an isolated coastal region Marianne must discover a way to paint Eloise who has been betrothed to an affluent Italian man. We witness the two getting closer as sexual tension stirs between them.

Little Women (2019)

This move is set directly after the Civil War, and has quite the ensemble. We see Jo March, the protagonist played by our very own Saoirse Ronan, navigate life as an aspiring writer. Her sister Amy lives in Paris and has a random encounter with a childhood crush, Theodore (played by Timothee Chalamet).

Complications arise as Theodore has previously proposed to Jo and was refused. Directed by Barbie’s very own Greta Gerwig this movie is the perfect period piece highlighting sisterhood, romance and coming of age.

The Other Boleyn Girl (2008)

This movie could possibly be the spiciest on our list, starring Scarlet Johansson and Natalie Portman.

The story follows an affluent family in 1521 Tudor England. It showcases a love triangle between two sisters, one of which is Mary Boleyn, the mistress of King Henry VII. If you’re looking for spice this is definitely the one!

Atonement (2007)

Atonement is a romantic war drama. We see this love story being told through three different time periods, 1953 England, the Second World War and a present day perspective.

We follow a challenging love story between Cecilia Tallis and Robbie Turner. In terms of spice levels all we have to say is “the library scene”.
