What To Know Before Buying The Perfect Piece of Jewellery

STELLAR PROMOTION: According to an expert...

There are plenty of things to consider before splashing out on a piece of jewellery this festive season.

The Cut Price Jewellers have been open on Dublin’s Meath Street for 24 years, and they know a thing or two about choosing the perfect piece.

We caught up with Fran, who has been in the family business since he was a teenager, to find out some much needed tips and tricks ahead of their busiest time of year.

We’ve also got a fabulous competition giving one lucky reader the chance to win an amazing €200 voucher! Read on for more…

Here’s everything you need to know about choosing the perfect piece this festive season.

1. Have an idea of what you want

Even if it’s your first time ever picking out a piece, you need to have a vague idea of what you’re after.

The Cut Price Jewellers team are there to give advice on everything from style to trends to what’s the best piece to buy for a man (you can never go wrong with a nice watch).

If you’re looking for a ring, know what kind of cut. If you’re after a personalised necklace, be aware of your budget.

As Fran puts it – “you wouldn’t go into a garage and say ‘what cars have you got?’ You need to have an idea.”

2. Don’t guess your loved one’s size

Fran says the most common mistake made when buying jewellery is not knowing what size your partner is… especially when it comes to engagement rings.

“Unless you’ve got a ring they wear, or know their exact size, don’t get the ring,” he says. “We always ask – ‘do they like white or yellow gold? Do they want a cluster ring or a single stone?’

“The next thing is the shape – do they want a princess cut, round, or pear shaped diamond? There are four main things you should know – the colour of gold, the ring size, the diamond shape, and your budget.”

Most people buying their first engagement ring will spend between €1,000 and €3,000, while those looking for an upgrade tend to go for a bigger, lab diamond.

3. Make it an experience

Buying a big piece is a big deal, so you want to make sure you’re in good hands.

The Cut Price Jewellers is adored in Dublin and beyond for their incredible customer service and personal touch.

“People love that it’s a family business, they love the vibe,” says Fran. “Over the years I’ve been asked ‘would you not do that up, would you not redo that?’ but everyone loves that warm feeling in the shop.”

They even have a workshop in the store (a rarity in jewellers these days), making that shopping experience even more special.

Fran’s team melt the gold, roll it out on the rolling mill, engrave, cut and polish all in store, to make sure that each piece is absolutely perfect.

4. Order in time!

The festive season is the busiest time of year for jewellers across the country, so if you’re hoping to get a personalised piece, you’d want to have gotten your order in early.

Hand-making jewellery takes time and labour… as does selling all of those engagement rings for New Year’s Eve proposals!

“People think Valentine’s Day is the busiest time for engagements, but for us, it’s not,” says Fran.

“Valentine’s Day proposals have gotten a bit cheesy over the past few years. The time between Stephen’s Day and New Year’s Eve is when people are doing it, that’s a busy week for us.”
