Diving Into The Buffy The Vampire Slayer Reboot
What we know so far
Dust off your crosses and sharpen your wooden stakes—Sarah Michelle Gellar is back in the world of Buffy the Vampire Slayer!
The beloved actress will reprise her role in a new reboot, alongside a production team that includes Academy Award-winning director Chloé Zhao and original executive producers like Gail Berman. Get ready to delve back into the nostalgic world of Sunnydale, that paved the way for the infamous vampire and supernatural genre that we love today.
Exciting news emerged earlier this month: a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot is officially in development at Hulu, and Zhao, known for her work on Nomadland and Eternals, will direct the project.
Screenwriters Nora and Lilla Zuckerman are crafting the script, and they describe the reboot as “the next chapter in the Buffy verse.” The reboot is nearing a pilot order, indicating it may be coming soon.

The new adaptation is being executive produced by Gellar, who famously portrayed Buffy in the original series. Other producers include Zhao, along with original executive producers Gail Berman, Fran Kuzui, and Kaz Kuzui.
Sources indicate that the reboot will focus on a younger Slayer, with Buffy Summers appearing as a recurring character rather than being the star. In February 2025, Gellar confirmed her involvement in the revival, sharing her initial hesitation about a reboot. During an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, she expressed her change of heart, citing the success of other series revivals as an inspiration.
Gellar reflected on her journey: “Three years ago, I received a call from my friend and mentor, Gail Berman, who wanted me to meet Chloé Zhao. Our conversation about the potential revival unexpectedly turned into a four-hour discussion about the significance of the show.” Gellar emphasised her commitment to ensuring the reboot honours the original series and resonates with fans, stating, “We will only make this show if we know we can do it right.”
As for returning cast members, Hulu has been tight-lipped. Fans are hopeful for the return of Alyson Hannigan, Nicholas Brendon, Anthony Head, and James Marsters. Sadly, Michelle Trachtenberg, who played Dawn Summers, passed away this month. She was reportedly in talks to return for the series prior to her death.
Buffy was one of the most defining television series of the 1990s, amassing a dedicated fanbase and achieving cult status. The show premiered on The WB on March 10, 1997, and ran for seven seasons, concluding its journey on May 20, 2003, – 22 years ago!
The series focused on Buffy Summers, a California teenager destined to combat evil forces in her hometown of Sunnydale, ultimately positioned as the ‘Chosen One.’ The original premise allowed for only one Slayer at a time, but the series finale hinted at a new generation of Slayers, leaving the door open for a fresh narrative.
Buffy is streaming on platforms Paramount and Disney+
