Ten years ago this week, on March 25, 2015, Directioners were thrown into a frenzy because the beautiful heartthrob that is Zayn Malik made the decision to officially leave One Direction.

In the years following his departure, Zayn candidly discussed his reasons for leaving One Direction. In a 2016 interview with Zane Lowe, he revealed, “I never really wanted to be in the band. I just gave it a go because it was there at the time.”

He elaborated on feeling very constrained artistically, noting that he couldn’t contribute to the music’s direction. This sentiment was echoed in his 2023 conversation with Alex Cooper on the Call Her Daddy podcast, where he spoke of internal politics, fractured friendships, and his urge to be the first to launch a solo career.

While we adore the One Direction discography, it’s impossible not to notice the shift in Zayn’s solo music and you can’t help but love his evolution. He had the courage to chase his own sound and creative freedom and we love that for him.
