This summer, the sun is most needed.

After the last few months of horrible, rainy, cold and depressing weather, the sun is the main thing we’re craving. To help get over this horrid weather, just imagine yourself sunbathing with a drink in hand, hearing the ocean waves crash and stress nowhere to be seen – heaven.

Let’s hope we feel some of the heat in Ireland this year, but just in case you are looking for guaranteed sun, we know some spots. Whether you’re after a party holiday or a sunny city break, this list contains it all.

1. Crete, Greece

Greece is sometimes referred to as the summer capital of the world, due to its consistent sunshine and with thousands of beaches, it’s a great sunny destination. There are many different places to visit in Greece, but we recommend Crete if you’re looking for that perfect beach and cocktail vibes.

Crete is the largest island in Greece, and fun fact, it’s historically known in Greek mythology as the birthplace of Zeus. The island offers over 300 days of sunshine year-round and is particularly famous for its diverse coastline. Not only is the sun guaranteed but the nightlife and adventures also await. The island has tons of activities from Hiking the Samaria Gorge (one of Europe’s longest canyons) to very affordable drinks and authentic cuisine, plus many clubs and bars with an active nightlife.

2. Palma de Mallorca, Spain

Palma de Mallorca, the capital of the Balearic Islands, is the perfect city escape/relaxation sun holiday. There are castles, cathedrals and crystal-clear Mediterranean bays. You get it all, frolm relaxing on the beach in blazing sunshine to exploring the gothic architecture along the narrow streets of the old town.

If you are looking for more of a party holiday, you can also head down towards Magaluf which is around a 30-minute drive. But there is also lots of nightlife in Palma, whether you’re looking for a beautiful rooftop to watch the sunset or live music in one of the many pubs or along the streets, there’s always somewhere to settle down for a few evening drinks.

3. Malta

If you’re seeking more of a party holiday still with plenty of sun, Malta is a popular destination this year. Although it is becoming a more party place, there is still lots of history and culture.

The blue lagoon is a must visit, known for its crystal-clear, turquoise waters and white sandy beaches, you can swim, dive and snorkel, only a boat trip away from the island. Many people are saying Malta is becoming the new Ibiza but a lot cheaper, with sunshine, cheap drinks and a whole strip of bars and clubs, it’s the perfect party paradise.

4. Prague, Czech Republic

A city break with lots of sun? The beautiful city of Prague is worth a look. The city is covered in gothic spires and cobblestones, making it feel like you’re walking the streets of a fairytale. One of the main attractions is the Charles Bridge, a 14th century stone-bridge lined with 30 statues connecting the old town to the lesser town (Mala Strana).

The local beer is cheap and there are some divine dining places dotted all around the city. The main square also features a breathtaking gothic church called the Church of our Lady Before Týn, admission is free and it is open every day.

5. Ayia Napa, Cyprus

Summer in Cyprus is defined by long, hot, and dry days with guaranteed sunshine. Ayia Napa is a perfect location for beachgoers who want to relish in the sun with a total of 12 hours of daily sunshine. There are many beaches, but one that stands out is Nissi Beach, a spot that looks like it was taken straight out of the Caribbean, with crystal water and white beaches, it’s pure bliss.

The lively nightlife is separated from the high-quality beaches and family resorts, making Ayia Napa the ideal destination for whatever you desire. If you are planning to travel with kids, there is a highly rated Waterworld themed waterpark, with dedicated areas for younger children and thrilling rides for teens. Many bars offer happy hours and buy-one-get-one-free deals, making sure you’re holiday budget is easy to stick to.

6. Tenerife, Canary Islands

Of course when we talk about guaranteed sun destination, we have to talk about the Canaries. Each island tends to be sunny all year round with many Irish people flocking there in the winter months. But summer is basically a 100% guarantee for a week, or two, in the sun.

Depending on what you’re looking for could impact your island choice. Tenerife is known best for nightlife, Lanzarote is known for its volcanic landscapes and hikes, Fuerteventura for its white-sand beaches and water sports, and Gran Canaria for diverse scenery and family-friendly atmosphere.

Each island offers something different, yet all are in the sun. We would recommend Tenerife as one of the best to go to, as it is the largest of the islands and also caters to everyone. With a vibrant nightlife on the Veronicas strip to Siam Park for a family day out, the activities are endless.
