"I believe in myself as an actress"

Euphoria is back, bringing with it questionable scenes of degradation, and plenty of behind the scenes chaos.

One person not returning for season 3 is Barbie Ferreira, the actress who played fan fav Kat Hernandez in the show’s first two seasons.

Much has been made of Barbie’s departure from the series, with rumours citing creative differences between herself and showrunner Sam Levinson, while others claimed that Barbie walked off set multiple time while shooting.

Barbie has finally told her story in full — and although she didn’t walk off set, she wasn’t entirely happy with the storylines her character was getting.

“It wasn’t dramatic,” she told Amanda Hirsch on the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast. “In fact, it was kind of the opposite of dramatic, where it was a long process of being like, ‘I don’t know if this is it for me’.

“And then having conversations with people and us trying to figure out how to make Kat a fully fleshed-out character, and it just wasn’t going anywhere.”

Barbie went on to say that she didn’t want to be “on the biggest TV show on earth if I’m not, like, acting.”

She went on: “So I would rather do an indie movie where I’m acting, I’m flexing my muscles, I’m being creatively asked to do things rather than kind of sitting around to be a background character.

“And some people are like, ‘I would do that’. I’m like, ‘Good for you’. Like, you want to be a background character for nine months? That’s, like, totally fine and cool.”

Barbie, who is currently starring in new horror film Faces Of Death, announced her departure from Euphoria back in 2022 following the show’s second season.

At the time she bid goodbye to Kat saying she had “four years of getting to embody the most special and enigmatic character.”

“I hope many of you could see yourself in her like I did and that she brought you joy to see her journey into the character she is today,” she said.

“I put all my care and love into her and I hope you guys could feel it. Love you, Katherine Hernandez.”

Barbie has now said that her decision to leave was a “long, arduous process” that she does not regret.

“I was like, I want to do other stuff. I want to produce indie cinema… I do indie movies that literally are made on a shoestring budget, but it’s like cool and real stories. And I’d rather that than kind of be a second thought,” she said.

“At the end of the day, [I] was like, ‘I believe in myself as an actress. And I want to see my career look a little differently than this. It’s okay if it’s not, like, the hit TV show. It’s fine.”

Since leaving Euphoria, Barbie has walked in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, starred in psychological thriller House Of Spoils, and appeared in a GAP campaign.

Her new film, Faces Of Death, is expected to begin streaming in Ireland soon.
