Everything That’s Happened Since Should I Marry A Murderer? Ended
"It has also been a cathartic experience"
Should I Marry A Murderer? landed on Netflix this month, and has quickly become one of the platform’s most talked about documentaries.
The three-part series follows Dr Caroline Muirhead, a Scottish woman who falls in love with a man named Sandy McKellar after meeting him on a dating app.
The pair enter into an intense, whirlwind relationship, leading to an engagement after only two months of dating.
It’s then that Sandy reveals to Caroline that he and his brother Robert were involved in a hit-and-run in 2017, which left cyclist Tony Parsons dead.
The brothers decided to bury Parsons’ body on the grounds of the estate they were living on, deep in the Scottish Highlands.
Grappling with this information, Caroline decides to go to the police, only to discover that what she expected to be a speedy arrest and charge would be a lengthy, anxiety-inducing process.
In the series Caroline details “the darkest period” of her life as she spends the next year spying on her fiancé in a haze of alcohol and drugs, as she waits for the police to gather enough evidence.
Eventually the case goes to trial and the brothers take a plea deal, but not before Caroline’s mental health reaches a critical point and she fails to testify against Sandy.
So, what has happened since then? The end of the documentary sees Sandy and Robert convicted and Caroline slowly begin to move on with her life.
She has since said that making the series has been a “cathartic experience” for her.
“Making the [Netflix] documentary meant revisiting the darkest of times, and none of that was easy,” Caroline told Tudum.
“But it has also been a cathartic experience. For the first time in several years, I now have hope for the future and the freedom to begin the next chapter of my life.”
She added that she is now “focused on rebuilding the bonds with loved ones that were fractured during her engagement.”
Caroline is also in a new relationship with a man who in her words is, “incredibly kind.” There is little else known about this new relationship other than than the pair live by the coast together.
It is also unclear whether Caroline is still a practicing doctor.
In the series, Caroline says that she was forced to take time off work due to the ongoing case. Later on, her deteriorating mental health made her unable to return to work.
According to The Tab, the General Medical Council states that a Caroline Elizabeth Muirhead was unregistered as a pathologist for an “administrative reason” on March 13th, 2024.
As for Sandy and Robert, the pair remain incarcerated. Robert is currently serving a four year sentence, making him eligible for release in 2027, while Sandy is serving a 12 year sentence making his release likely closer to 2035.
