Why Is Everyone Obsessed With Facial Asymmetry Now?

Your face is probably not as uneven as TikTok wants you to think.

One of the weirdest things social media has done is convince us that having two slightly different sides of your face is a personal failure.

You know the spiral. You take a selfie, flip it, stare at it for ages and suddenly you are convinced that one eye is in a different postcode to the other. Then TikTok shows you a symmetry filter, someone starts talking about the golden ratio, and now you are analysing your jawline while holding a ruler up against your face.

But facial asymmetry is not rare. It is basically human. Most people have one or two features don’t line up perfectly. Whether it’s one eyebrow that sits slightly higher, one side of their smile that pulls more, or one cheek that photographs better. Facial asymmetry can happen for a whole host of reasons, from genetics, ageing, sleeping on one side, or just chewing more on one side.

A recent review on facial symmetry described mild facial asymmetry as very common and part of the normal biological situation in humans. Which is science’s way of saying: please relax, nobody’s face is perfectly mirrored.

So why do we care so much?

@drjoe_md Did you know side sleeping can lead to wrinkles and facial asymmetry over time? Your pillow might feel cozy, but it’s not doing your skin any favors! Switch to a silk pillowcase, alternate sides, or try back sleeping to keep your face smooth and even. Because symmetry has always been linked to beauty. Humans are naturally drawn to balance, and research has found that more symmetrical faces are often perceived as more attractive. This links back to our evolutionary instincts, because symmetry can subconsciously signal health, strong development and good genetics.

But honestly, social media has made the whole thing much worse.

Filters now let us flip, mirror and “perfect” our faces in seconds. What used to be a tiny thing you might notice once in a bad photo is now something you can study from every angle before breakfast. No wonder people are so obsessed with fixing features that most people that look at you will never even notice.

And yes facial asymmetry can worsen with age. As skin loses its elasticity, collagen is reduced and facial fat shifts, one side of the face can age slightly different to the other. Daily habits that go unnoticed can cause these asymmetries to get worse over time, such as sleeping on one side of your face only or driving with sun on one side of your face.

But you can actually change these asymmetries, sepending on what caused them.

This is where a bit of detective work and self-revelation is needed. You have to acknowledge whether the asymmetry is down to posture, tension, puffiness or everyday habits. If it is, small lifestyle changes can help balance out the face. Improving your posture, sleeping on your back, using SPF properly, gently massaging the face and just being more aware of your bad habits can all play a big part in stopping those asymmetries from becoming more defined.

Makeup and hair can also do a lot more than people realise. A slightly different brow shape, a side parting, contour, liner or even face-framing layers can balance the face visually without changing anything permanently.

Then there are cosmetic treatments. Fillers can sometimes be used to add volume where one side of the face looks flatter, while Botox can help if one brow lifts higher or one side of the smile pulls more strongly. In more severe cases, especially where teeth, jaw or bone structure are involved, treatment can become more medical and may involve orthodontics or surgery.

But this is very different from panicking because you flipped a photo and thinking you look weird.

@aubreyclaree_ It’s been a minute!! But always here to remind you that asymmetry does not make you look ugly at ALL. UR PERFECT. 🫶🏼✨ #tmj #asymmetry #asymmetrical #Inverted #asymmetricalface #tmjdisorder ♬ answering machine – ↻ ◁ II ▷ ↺

The important thing is knowing the difference between normal asymmetry and something that genuinely affects your confidence or function. A slightly uneven smile is normal. But a sudden or drastic change in your face should always be something that should be checked by a medical professional as soon as possible.

For most of us, though, the issue isn’t that our faces are widely asymmetrical but that we have been focusing on these asymmetries way too much.

A perfectly symmetrical face of course sounds ideal, but it could look a little uncanny in real life. Your brain gets used to seeing your face in the mirror, so even minor changes can stand out dramatically. And sometimes, the features we think look off are the exact things people around us find memorable, expressive or genuinely lovely about our face.

So yes, facial asymmetry can sometimes be softened, balanced or treated. But it does not always need to be fixed.

Because most of the time, the thing you are obsessing over is not ruining your face. It is just making you look like an actual person.
