Love Island’s Fitzy: ‘Once You Find Love, You Become Irrelevant’

He came, he saw, he left Love Island of his own accord – Fitzy, or Seán Fitzgerald to you, is back in Ireland after a six week stint in the villa. 

Fitzy was an OG islander this season. Entering the villa on Day One, he immediately coupled up with Lola and brought some serious Irish charm to the series.

And he was happy to leave when he did. He and Lola opted out of the show last week, and since then the Galway native has been busy adjusting to the outside world, chatting to press, and of course, hitting up Copper Face Jacks.

He tells STELLAR: “It was excellent. But Jesus, like, just walking around, everyone is coming up to you. Like, I’m used to it a little bit from football and stuff but I mean, there was just [phone] lights everywhere.

“Even the bouncer was like, ‘oh, do you want to come upstairs?’ I don’t want to be that guy. But yeah, nights out are going to be a bit different. I just want to dance and jump around to white girl music, like that’s really all I want!”

Of course life is going to be different after leaving the villa. And even though much of the Love Island experience was as he expected, Fitzy was surprised he met someone he clicked with so quickly.

“I did think going in, ‘I want to find a girlfriend, like,’ but I didn’t think it would happen.
Genuinely I thought I’d just flirt with everyone and keep hopping from person having the craic.

“But no, on the first day I see this girl who is outrageously hot, with a great personality and we just clicked. Her humour is the same as mine and it just worked, it’s mad.”

Seán and Lola were one of the only couples to stay together from Day One. And even though their journey was cut short, Fitzy says he “couldn’t care less” about winning the show.

“Honestly, when we were in there I completely forgot there was money even involved. You’re just enjoying the experience and you forget.
I’d say now [the islanders] are more aware of it because the show’s coming towards the end. But at my stage, I couldn’t care less. You’re not there for the money.

“I do want Yas and Tommy to win though because I think they remind me of me and Lola. But when you find love, you become irrelevant and boring, so they might not win. But if we’re going off what the show is actually about they should win.

“I would say Lorenzo and Julia will actually win, based on them both being entertaining characters. They have good one-liners, they’re funny. They’re the most entertaining couple.”

Seán and Lola may have left the villa, but they have plenty planned. After the Love Island final next week, they’re planning on doing some travelling, meeting each other’s friends and family, and even considering Lola’s big move to Ireland.

“When we come back from holidays, we’re planning to move in together, whether that’s in Galway or Dublin,” he says.

“Lola said to me in the villa that she wanted to move over, and she had told everyone before she told me!
So when she told me I was like, happy days because I don’t want to move to the UK. She knows I have football here, she can’t wait to be a WAG.

“She’s getting cultured. When we got dumped, we were in holding for a few days and we watched The Young Offenders, she loved that. I played Galway Girl for her, I showed her my Irish singing music video. We’ll be in Coppers every weekend!”

Of course, Fitzy wasn’t the only Irish creator in the villa. Charleen Murphy landed into Casa Amor after weeks of speculation – and it turns out Seán even saw her in the airport when he was heading to Mallorca.

“I didn’t know if she was going in, but I was in contact with her, and she was keeping me updated with how she was getting on with her application process.

“She was going home from a brand trip from Palma and I had just arrived to go into [villa] holding. I met her in the airport when I was getting on my flight. It was so funny, we were like, ‘might see you in there at some stage hopefully, maybe in Casa or something!’ and then she came in.

“She was like, ‘oh, Fitz, you’re really quiet. Like, what’s going on?’ I was like, ‘no, I’m not.
Like, I literally have been me, I did loads! They just didn’t show it.”

So what exactly is it about the Irish that people seem to love? Fitzy reckons it’s the craic.. and the accent, obviously.

“We just bring the craic. But it’s also the accent and the Irish charm. Even when I first went into Love Island, I was just talking and the girls were like, wow, love the accent. I was like, Jesus, this is nice. 
It’s nice to be liked. You don’t have to do much!”

We’ve got one more question for Fitzy before we let him go, and it’s an important one: if he had’ve been there for the Love Island Talent Show, what would his talent have been?

“I have two things I would have done, right?” he says. “One is a magic trick with cards, which is actually really good. I know that sounds terrible. But the other thing is I would have played the button accordion, because I play a button accordion quite well.

“Nobody would be expecting it and it’d be just really good.
I have kind of shown everyone what Ireland’s about, and playing an Irish traditional instrument would have been really cool.

“It probably wouldn’t have been that sexy, but it would’ve been cool.”
