So we know the best way to avoid a hangover is obviously to avoid drinking so much you end up sick. (It’s really not a good look, gals.) But, we get it; sometimes you overindulge and wake up with a seriously banging headache the next day. Sob.
Sadly, our standard ‘cures’; guzzling lots of water, tucking into a greasy fry, and eating anything sugary we can get our hands on, just doesn’t cut it when it comes to curing that nasty hangover. These remedies however, are much more effective.
1. Lime
Can’t stomach regular old H2O on a hangover? Just like lemons, limes are pretty good at giving hangovers the heave-ho. Try adding two teaspoons of fresh lime juice and a teaspoon of honey to a pint of water when you wake up and see if it makes a difference.
2. Amazing eggs
A greasy fry won’t cure your hangover, but eggs might. James Bond’s preferred fix was the prairie oyster—a raw egg, some Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, salt, and pepper in a glass. But since raw eggs are scary, reach for cooked ones—they’re packed with cysteine, an amino acid vital to detoxing.
3. Coconut water
Forget sugary sports drinks, which will only make you crash later in the day. Trendy coconut water is a sort of natural Gatorade. This genius drink has the same five electrolytes found in our blood, which will help you rehydrate post-partying.
4. Peppermint tea
Our personal fave hangover cure is peppermint tea. Peppermint is a digestive aid that helps to relieve tension, bloating and other unpleasantries in the stomach. It also speeds up the detoxification process – much better than just gallons of water or a cake of coke.
5. Gherkins
So being a boozehound leaves the body depleted of vitamins, minerals and salt. They might not be the first thing you reach for post-party, but gherkins are rich in nutrients including vitamin A, iron, potassium, vitamin K, calcium and manganese, so, though it might sound strange, eating a few gherkins might actually help you get over the worst of it.
6. Honey
Got a sweet tooth? Switch out sugary jellies and bars of chocolate for honey. Why? It’s bursting with potassium and toxin-battling antioxidants, as well as fructose to replace the sugars lost from your depleted brain after all that vino. For the ultimate cure, spread some on a slice of wholemeal toast.
7. Tomatoes
Not only are tomatoes particularly high in vitamin C, but they contain glutathione as well – the substance the body produces to help counteract hangover-inducing toxins. The tomato puree base on your Dominos order doesn’t count though. Sorry.
8. Ginger
Jittery tummy? As well as being a powerful antioxidant, ginger can help to ease a sick tummy by acting as an anti-inflammatory in our digestive system and blocking serotonin receptors in the stomach. Reach for a can of still ginger ale, chop some into a stir fry or slurp back a ginger tea to feel the difference. Uh, buh-bye hangover!
