#MyFitJourney: We Meet Sarah Godfrey, Our Latest Fitspiration For Summer
Sarah talks fitness, health, and diet and tells us what we need to do to get in shape for the summer.
You are in fantastic shape. How long has it taken to get to where you are now?
I’ve been training properly and lifting weights for the last two years. Before that, I went to the gym but mainly did classes and cardio.
Were you always slim?
Well I was never overweight, but I was probably a bit heavier when I was in my teens.
How often do you work out?
I go to the gym five days a week. I train two lower body days and two upper body days a week and then I’ll do a day of cardio. That’s usually running on the treadmill for about half an hour, on incline.
What exercise could you not live without?
I’m going to give the typical answer here, squats! Not only do they work the entire lower body but they engage your core too. Squatting also burns a lot of calories which people don’t really know.
What’s your diet like?
I watch my calories and try to get a decent amount of protein in every day. I follow flexible dieting so every day I eat things I enjoy, as long as I’m staying within my calorie and macronutrient goals (Protein, Carbs, Fats). I stick mostly to whole foods but there’s no reason you can’t treat yourself and have things you enjoy too. There are no foods on the banned list for me. It’s very important to have a good relationship with food.
Ever let loose or fall off the wagon?
I think everyone does! But for me, it never lasts long. I snap myself out of it pretty quickly and try to get back on track as soon as I can.
What are your favourite treats?
I love frozen yogurt and eat it regularly, I’m obsessed! I have a big sweet tooth so I love my treats.
Any tips for when we do fall off the wagon?
You need to think about why you started in the first place and remember how good you feel when you’re on top of your training and nutrition.
Do you drink alcohol?
To be honest, I get the worst hangovers so no, it wouldn’t be a regular thing! I probably drink once every month or two.
You make up one half of a very fit couple, does your boyfriend Rob Lipsett influence or motivate your fitness regime?
Rob has taught me a lot about training and nutrition and cleared up a lot of myths for me that I used to believe were true. Living with him does help me stay on track.
Can you give us four tips for getting into shape before the summer?
1. Start lifting weights
2. Don’t overly restrict your calories or food choices as this will lead to binge eating.
3. Follow a nutrition and training plan that you can sustain.
4. Enjoy the process!
What about when we go on our holidays? It’s so hard to not lose the run of ourselves!
Use your holiday as a break and enjoy yourself. I go to the gym while I’m away as I genuinely like working out, but I relax a lot with my diet. One week won’t ruin a years worth of hard work.
