“It’s The Only Way To Succeed”: Alesha Dixon Just Gave Us The Most Deadly Advice About Being Confident

Self assurance hasn't always been a given for Alesha. She tells us how she cracked the confidence code.

Flormar Alesha

Britain’s Got Talent judge, one third of noughties girl band Mis-Teeq and a successful solo career to boot. You’d think that confidence would come naturally for Alesha Dixon, but chatting to us last night at Flormar’s first birthday at The Crypt at Christ Church, she revealed that wasn’t always the case.

“When I look back to how I was when I was 17 or 18 I didn’t have as much confidence as I have now,” she admits. “So whenever I see anyone walk out on the Britain’s Got Talent stage I think ‘fair play’ because you’re literally being thrust into the limelight in front of 12 million people. It’s a big deal.”

Thankfully for Alesha, she’s come a long way from her teenage years, but just how has she mastered her confidence to become the fierce performer and TV personality that we know today?

“I think it’s all down to experience,” reveals Alesha. “When you’re younger you have to blag it, you’ve to blag your way through so many things; you put on a smile, you do what you’ve got to do and you kinda dive in. Yes you feel the fear, but you do it anyway. It’s the only way to succeed.”

“People often worry about getting older,” she continues, “but I see it as a positive thing because the older I get the more relaxed I become. I don’t worry so much about things and I’m confident in my abilities and that’s really what gets me through.”

In short, for Alesha, building confidence is all about accepting opportunities, faking it until you make it and learning along the way.

“It’s all about trial and error,” she adds. “Then after so many years you look at the formula and you see what works and what doesn’t work. You get to know yourself and you become more comfortable.”
