Florals For Spring? 5 Ways The Devil Wears Prada Has Changed Our Wardrobes Forever
It's one of our favourite ever fashion flicks and it's had a profound effect on our style.
It’s the film that launched a thousand memes, and it’s been a whole 10 years since ice goddess Miranda Priestlty first graced the silver screen in The Devil Wears Prada.
To recap, the film follows Andy, a budding journalist who, despite her misgivings about the shallowness of the fashion industry, takes on a junior level position under the editorship of the formidable Miranda Priestly at high-fashion mag Runway, in order to fast-track her career.
But the film doesn’t just offer up some important lessons about what it takes to succeed; here are just a few ways the iconic flick has affected our wardrobes too.
1. What is cerulean?
It may sound like part of the periodic table, but if you’ve watched one of the most iconic scenes of the film, you will never forget that, it isn’t just blue, (or turquoise, or lapis), it’s cerulean.
What we’ve learnt:
Cerulean (pronounced sir-rule-ee-on) is a deep shade of blue, similar to a clear blue sky.
If we know one thing now, it’s that choosing between blue and blue is a matter of serious importance.
Cerulean dress, €42.24, Mango
Cerulean dress, €408.44, Self Portrait
2. Florals for Spring
Yes, their credibility is ever so slightly derided by Miranda in the film. But, florals for Spring? Well, it just works, doesn’t it?
What we’ve learnt:
An annual staple that can be reworn each year, we are claiming fair economy on this one. And from looking at these timeless pieces we reckon it’s rightly so.
Jumpsuit, €225.34, Whistles
Shoes, €28.17, Asos
3. Black is still the new black
Like three en mode monsters, Miranda and co. work the room in slick black ensembles.
What we’ve learnt:
Contrary to the popular belief of the ladies of Litchfield, orange will never replace the classic, uber chic staple. All hail the LBD. HOLLA!
Black dress, €42.25, Monki
Black dress, €39.44, Asos
4. Coat goals
Like we get that it’s just a film and all, but seeing as many of us have gone down the intern route ourselves, we can’t help but feeling slightly hard done by at Andy’s ridiculous array of amazing coats. We don’t want to say we’re jealous or anything but she’s wearing a freaking Chanel blazer in the first pic. Sob.
What we’ve learnt:
To succeed in fashion you require two things:
- Hard work
- A crazy beautiful amount of outerwear.
Cream duster coat, €190.13, Selected Femme
Green trench coat, €63.38, First & I
5. Statement earrings
Miranda has a keen eye for ear-gear, especially something with a little sparkle.
What we’ve learnt:
The bigger the earrings, the better. Whether she’s rocking her Michael Kors hoops or diamond chandeliers, Miranda’s ear candy is always a sight to be seen.
Tassle earrings, €8.45, Glamorous
Hoop earrings, €14.08, River Island
