The Word Of The Year Has Been Announced And It Sums Up What A Sh*tstorm 2016 Has Been

And to think that last year's word was such a good 'un.

Donald Trump Nigel Farage

A slew of celebrity deaths, the Brexit decision and Trump’s election as president… there are quite a few negatives you could take away from 2016 if you really wanted to.

With that in mind, Oxford Dictionariesย ‘word of the year’ was never going to be a good one.

While the ‘face with tears of joy emoji’ (yes, we’re aware that’s a pictograph, and not a word) was deemed worthing of encapsulating 2015, this year’s nominated word isn’t so cheery.

Tears Of Joy Emoji

The word is post-truth.

For those of you thinking ‘come again?’ Mashable defines it as โ€œrelating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal beliefโ€.

Hmm. Relate that back to recent global events and you might just get a gist of why it was chosen.

Here’s to a positive 2017, eh?
