Wait, What?! Why Is Leonardo DiCaprio Getting Blamed For That Awkward Oscars Blunder?

The conspiracy theories continue.

The biggest Oscars eff up in history happened last night and we haven’t quite recovered.

In case you missed it, La La Land was mistakenly announced as the winner of Best Picture, when in fact it was Moonlight that had scooped the gong.

The discovery was made while the cast and crew of La La Land were already on stage delivering their acceptance speeches.

“No, there’s a mistake,” the film’s producer Jordan Horowitz revealed. “Moonlight, you guys won best picture. This is not a joke.”

Argh. So painfully awkward.

Since then there have been legions of fans who refuse to take the morto moment at face value and have come up with all kinds of conspiracy ideas.

One theory suggests that it was all a publicity stunt by Oscars’ organisers hoping to boost the award ceremony’s falling viewing figures.


Perhaps the wackiest of all the theories though, is the suggestion that it was all Leonardo DiCaprio’s doing.

Yep, for reals. One eagle-eyed fan on Twitter has called it, noting that Leo was holding the Best Actress envelope that he handed to Emma Stone for La La Land, which preceded Best Picture.

To recap, Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway incorrectly announced La La Land as the winner, because they were reading from the Best Actress envelope, not Best Picture.


“OMG it was Leo’s fault. Leo carried that card offstage, put it down when he saw Warren and Warren picked it up,” writes Twitter user Kelly Oxford.

The insinuation is that Leo messed up this year’s ceremony to get back at the organisers for all those years he was snubbed, only picking up his first Academy Award in 2016, despite countless nominations.

Our thoughts? We reckon it really was just a mess up. After all, Price Water Coopers, the organisation that tallies up the votes and organises the envelopes have already claimed responsibility.

“We sincerely apologise to Moonlight, La La Land, Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway, and Oscar viewers for the error that was made during the award announcement for best picture,” they said in a statement.

See? No conspiracy here. What do you reckon?
