Demi Lovato Has Opened Up About Being Sober And Her Ongoing Battle With Substance Abuse
"I see a therapist twice a week, I go to AA meetings..."
Demi Lovato has been struggling with substance abuse since she was a teenager, even telling Access Hollywood, “I couldn’t go 30 minutes to an hour without cocaine and I would bring it on airplanes.”
And at the age of 19, she admitted, “I was going to the airport and I had a Sprite bottle just filled with vodka and it was just 9 in the morning…”
But the Skyscraper singer has been working hard to stay sober in recent years, and in a new interview with Us Weekly, she described what life is like for her now.
She said, “I do work on it every single day. Every day is a battle… Some days are easier than others and some days, you forget about drinking and using.

“I work on my physical health, which is important, but my mental health as well,” she said. “I see a therapist twice a week, I make sure I stay on my medications, I go to AA meetings, I do what I can physically in the gym, you know, I make it a priority.
“When I went to rehab, my manager said, ‘You know, you can either keep this private or you can share this with the world and hopefully someone can learn from your struggles,’ and when I heard that, I mean, it’s more important for people to learn from my struggles than keep it to myself.”

In March of this year, Demi posted about her progress on Instagram, saying she’s been sober for five whole years. “So grateful,” she began, “It’s been quite the journey. So many ups and downs. So many times I wanted to relapse but sat on my hands and begged God to relieve the obsession.
“I’m so proud of myself,” she continued, “but I couldn’t have done it without my higher power (God), my family, friends, and everyone else who supported me. Feeling humbled and joyful today. Thank you guys for sticking by my side and believing in me.”
