Editor’s Choice: Five New Netflix Picks To Watch This Weekend
In a new weekly column, STELLAR editor-in-chief Vicki Notaro rounds up her faves. This week, the best new stuff to stream for a lazy weekend
It’s Friday, and let’s be honest, you’re likely to spend a lot of this weekend couch-surfing. Why don’t you watch something decent while you’re at it? I’ve been spending evenings bingeing the best Netflix has to offer, and there are some absolutely excellent new shows to sink your teeth into. Let the eye-feasting begin!
Queer Eye
Oh God, what can I even say about this show other than it’s one of the best things I’ve ever watched? I remember the original Queer Eye For The Straight Guy back in the early Noughties, but I was a bit young and it was a bit too American. This Netflix reboot is, in the words of the new Fab Five, about tolerance when the original was about acceptance.
The basic premise is five gay lads making over another man’s life. From what he eats to his gaff, his grooming to his clothes, they essentially just help a guy get his confidence back and to appreciate himself. It is beautiful, you will cry (happy tears) and Jonathan is a supserstar on the rise.
Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee
This is case of the title really hitting the nail on the head, and is a very good description of what this show is all about. Jerry Seinfeld chooses a celebrity comedian and a classic car every episode, and combines the two en route for a cuppa Joe.
My husband drools over the cars, we both laugh, and it’s lovely how simultaneously ordinary and special this show is. Highlights for me were Sarah Jessica Parker, Tina Fey, Julia Louis Dreyfuss and Chris Rock.
Seeing Allred
Gloria Allred is one of those high profile Hollywood attorneys whose name crops up when a big celebrity case breaks. With a focus on human, and particularly women’s, rights, she’s been popping up a lot lately between Cosby, Trump and Weinstein. This documentary doesn’t shy away from the fact that a lot of people consider her an absolute weapon, but it also gets to the heart of the woman, and cracks her tough facade a little.
It paints a portrait of a woman who’s been a survivor of sexual abuse, and has dedicated her life to fighting misogyny and discrimination. Yes, she’s ballsy and brash, but don’t you have to be when going up against the patriarchy? What’s really shocking is how little has changed in the forty-odd years she’s been practising…
Ugly Delicious
This one is brand new, and it’s all about the kind of food that isn’t beautiful or classy, but it is orgasmic. I’ve only watched one episode, but it’s all about international influence on home cooking, casual food, and having fun with what you’re eating. I’m very jealous of chef David Chang, who basically gets to travel the world talking about food and eating in the name of this docu-series;. Warning: may inspire cooking.
The Crown Season 2
Okay, so this one isn’t quite so new, but it is an absolute must-see – I keep shrieking at people to watch it immediately. If you haven’t binged these two seasons, you are seriously missing out. It has it all; drama, intrigue, the fact that it’s based on real events and people, magnificent sets and costumes, romance, betrayal and cut-glass British accents. Claire Foy is spectacular as QEII, and Vanessa Kirby’s performance as Princess Margaret has led to me developing a slight obsession with the Queen’s late sister. The Crown is like a very highly-produced soap opera, but with a lot more elegance. I wish I could watch it all over again – actually, I might.
