Netlfix’s The Innocent Man

If there’s one thing we love in life it’s a good true crime documentary. Yea, they can be grim and disturbing, but nothing will keep you hooked like a murder mystery. Netflix is our go-to for all things creepy, so whether you’re looking for a quick documentary or an intense docuseries, here are eight of our favourites for you to binge at your leisure.

Amanda Knox

This is an hour and a half long documentary that tells the story of the trial, conviction and acquittal of Amanda Knox for the murder of an exchange student in Italy. This is one of those documentaries that will have you fighting with yourself over whether you think she’s guilty or not.

Casting JonBenet

The unsolved death of six-year-old American beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey remains the world’s most sensational child murder case. This film recounts the events and conspiracies that surround the young girl’s death and is truly gripping.

Making a Murderer

If you’re looking for an long, intense watch, this series is for you. Over two seasons, this docuseries follows the unprecedented story of two men accused of a grisly crime they may not have committed. There are so many details in this so you’ll have to pay attention, but we guarantee that once you start, you won’t be able to turn it off.

Tower

Combining archival footage, animation and interviews, this film explores the 1966 mass shooting from the University of Texas’s clock tower. The documentary follows the shooting from the perspectives of several survivors, recreating their recounts via actors filmed and later animated.

The Innocent Man

This documentary adaptation of John Grisham’s book raises troubling questions about two murder cases in Ada, Oklahoma, in the 1980s. The six-part docuseries takes a closer look at the notorious deaths. It includes interviews with the victims’ friends and family members, Ada residents, attorneys, journalists and others involved in the case – including Grisham himself.

The Staircase

Accident or murder? After the mysterious death of his wife, author Michael Peterson watches his life go under the microscope. The docuseries will have you literally asking ‘wtf?’ all the way through. It’s a bit slow to start but give it a chance and you’ll be hooked.

Captive For 18 Years: The Jaycee Lee Story

In June 1991, Jaycee Lee Dugard was kidnapped while waiting at a bus stop in South Lake Tahoe; in 2009, an investigation began that would lead to the discovery that she was alive and had been held captive by a sex offender for 18 years.  The documentary focuses on the story of Dugard’s kidnapping, recovery, and the beginnings of the trial including interviews with her stepfather.

The Keepers

This is a seven-episode docuseries that explores the unsolved murder of nun Sister Cathy Cesnik, who taught English and drama at Baltimore’s Archbishop Keough High School, and her former students’ belief that there was a cover-up by authorities after Cesnik suspected that a priest at the school, A. Joseph Maskell, was guilty of sexual abuse of students.
