The Stanford Rape Survivor Has Revealed Her Identity To Reclaim Her Story
In 2015, the woman was assaulted by Brock Turner while she was unconscious.
The woman assaulted by Brock Turner at Stanford University in 2015 has now revealed her identity in an effort to reclaim her story.
For years, Chanel Miller was known to the world as Emily Doe and now she is sharing her identity and her story in a new memoir, Know My Name.
Published by Penguin, Know My Name will “forever transform the way we think about sexual assault, challenging our beliefs about what is acceptable and speaking truth to the tumultuous reality of healing.”
“It also introduces readers to an extraordinary writer, one whose words have already changed our world. Entwining pain, resilience, and humour, this memoir will stand as a modern classic.”
The case was hugely talked about all over the world for various reasons including Brock Turner’s lenient sentence and Chanel’s powerful impact statement.
The statement began with the chilling sentence “You don’t know me, but you’ve been inside me.”
The statement went on to describe the effect the assault had on her and how she learned about much of the rape from an article she read. Because, at the time, she was unconscious.
Brock Turner was sentenced to just six months in county jail. A verdict that angered and horrified many people. He served three of those six months.
Chanel will also appear on 60 Minutes on which she reads her powerful statement and discusses her decision to release a book.
“I had to force myself to relearn my real name, my identity. To relearn that… I am a human being who has been irreversibly hurt.” Chanel Miller – seen here reading from her victim impact statement – talks with Bill Whitaker, Sunday, 9/22, on “60 Minutes” https://t.co/VILceUQoV4 pic.twitter.com/K0sPPtnG98
