Normal People Season Two? Director Lenny Abrahamson Shares His Thoughts
Finished the series and now looking for more?
The final of Normal People, the TV adaptation of Sally Rooney’s incredible novel aired on RTÉ last Tuesday night. Devastating fans who weren’t ready for the story to end, it’s safe to say we’re all still living for the storyline and the incredible portrayal of Marianne and Connell brought to life by Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal.
However, for those waiting patiently for a second season and an answer to all those questions the show left open ended, it looks like you’ll be waiting.
Lenny Abrahamson, director of the show, has confirmed that, despite its worldwide success, there are no plans to continue Marianne and Connell’s story.
He mentioned that while there are no plans in place right now, he isn’t ruling out returning to the character’s stories in the future.
He said: “I think the straight answer is, in a way it’s the end of the story. That’s where Sally [Rooney] left it in the book.”
“It feels like the complete cut when you finish the novel. Having said that, in terms of the story and what it says about the characters, it is open.”
He continued to say, “there’s no plan at all for a second season in a traditional sense of ‘let’s just pick up where we left off in the first season’ but we always talked about the fact that it would be lovely to know where these characters were in the next five to 10 years. So, who knows? But as of now, no.”
Speaking to Ian Dempsey on Today FM, Abrahamson stated he thinks that the current lockdown may have added to the emotional response to the show. “Probably something to do with the lockdown maybe makes people that bit more open emotionally or the themes of intimacy, that aspect of it means something in these circumstances particularly.”
“Whether you’re that age and you’re going through it or whether you’re a bit older and you remember it, it is those first strong feelings that you have as you’re becoming an adult, that first relationship you have, also the experience of leaving where you’re from. These are things that are very universal.”
Well, there ya have it.
