It was the anticipated return and boy, it didn’t disappoint. Always a firm favourite to sit down and watch, the brand new series of Reeling in the Years returned to our screens last night on RTÉ.
Now in its sixth season, the show is going through some of the top moments between 2010-2019, and last night, it began with the year 2010.
Recalling the top entertainment, sport and current affairs news, each episode will also showcase the top tunes of that particular decade.
For the first episode, the show looked at some of the biggest moments which happened 11 years ago, from severe weather changes, remember the ash cloud from an Icelandic volcano? The freezing temperatures? To the death of loved broadcaster Gerry Ryan, Ireland’s economic crash reaching it’s crisis point, Cork beating Down in the All-Ireland football final and Amy Huberman tying the knot with Brian O’Driscoll. Yes, it was a pretty full on year and one people forgot was so full on until they took a trip down memory lane last night.
Starting the show with one of the “still to this day highlights”, it opened with the now legendary scene of “the man who slipped on the ice” outside Dublin’s Four Courts during a live RTÉ broadcast in January 2010.
RTÉ reporter John Kilraine was in the middle of a news report when a passerby lost his footing on the steps behind, hitting the ground with a big bang. The man in question, who is still unknown, has a plaque dedicated to him for his pop culture moment in history.
Iconic.
Here’s some of the best tweets from Sunday night
Nothing makes you feel old quite like being in bed at 8.30 pm on a Sunday evening. Except being in bed at 8.30 pm on a Sunday evening and your mother texting you to say you were on Reeling in The Years.

Defund every other project RTÉ has and put the money towards Reeling in the Years, I want a 6 hour special for every year since the beginning of time

Just about recovered from being on Reeling In The Years. But I don’t think I will ever recover from the fact it’s been 11 years since that fella slipped on the ice.

Ugh lads the thrill I get from Reeling in the Years isn’t wise. Plz tell me it’s normal to be feeling equal parts hope and doom from watching the bits we lived through/remember and…….. I just really hope it gets better (both the show and actual real life)
