A 23-Year-Old Man Has Taken His Own Life In A Suicide Seemingly Inspired By 13 Reasons Why

According to reports, he left tapes behind for those that he felt contributed to his death.

When 13 Reasons Why aired on Netflix earlier this year, it was feared by many that the series would encourage vulnerable viewers to carry out the same acts as done by the protagonist, Hannah Baker.

In the 13-part series, the leading female character can be seen graphically taking her own life, and leaves behind a number of audio tapes for classmates who she believes caused her death.

Psychologists worried that the show was glamorising suicide, and that anyone who already had suicidal thoughts might be inspired to take their own lives in the same way Hannah did.

In what is being described as a ‘13 Reasons Why-inspired suicide, Diario Clarín, a South American news outlet, has reported that a 23-year-old man from Peru has taken his own life and left tapes behind for those that he alleged caused his suicide.

It’s been said that Franco Alonso Lazo Medrano jumped from his fourth floor apartment, shouting, “I can’t stand a heartbreak,” while his mother watched helplessly. He survived the fall and was later brought to San Juan de Dios hospital where he was pronounced dead.

When police arrived at the scene, they found two suicide notes that Franco had left behind. One was a goodbye note to a girl named Claudia, explaining that he loves her and wishes her the best. The other note included instructions, with the names of people he’d carefully selected, to receive tapes he had previously recorded on his computer.

Since concern by psychologists was raised, Netflix released a statement saying, “There has been a tremendous amount of discussion about our series, 13 Reasons Why. While many of our members find the show to be a valuable driver for starting an important conversation with their families, we have also heard concern from those who feel the series should carry additional advisories.

“Moving forward, we will add an additional viewer warning card before the first episode as an extra precaution for those about to start the series.”
