#JustATampon: The Taboo-Breaking Social Media Trend You Need To Get Involved In
Is your news feed full of Tampon selfies? It's not just a mindless social craze. It actually carries a very important message.
Do you get a bit morto when asking a friend for a tampon? Or feel majorly awks when buying a box down the local supermarket?
While talking about tampons is still a bit of a taboo, imagine if you didn’t have access to them.
According to Plan UK, 28% of girls in Uganda have to miss school when they have their period cos they simply don’t have access to hygienic or affordable sanitary products.
Enter the #JustATampon trend; a selfie challenge designed by Plan UK and Vpoint news, to bust the stigma associated with your monthly flow, and raise some much needed funds for women in Uganda.
“The stigma and embarrassment attached to women’s periods contributes to gender inequality worldwide,” says Plan UK. “Because it’s just a tampon – there’s nothing to be embarrassed about, but just a tampon can change women’s lives.”
The deadly news is that getting involved couldn’t be easier. Just snap a pic of yourself with a tampon, and post it to social media with the hashtag #JustATampon.
And if you happen to be in the UK you can text TAMPON to 70007 to donate £3, which, FYI, is enough to buy a year’s worth of sanitary products in Uganda.
We’re getting involved. Are you?
