EYNTK About Ariana Grande & Ethan Slater’s Split

The internet is not done talking about how it all began

Former Wicked co-stars turned couple Ariana Grande and Ethan Slater have reportedly called time on their relationship after nearly three years together, but let’s be honest, this was never going to be a normal celebrity break up story.

According to reports, Ariana and Ethan quietly split several months ago, with a source telling People that it was “amicable” and that they “gave lots of time and careful consideration” before deciding to go their separate ways.

The source also claimed they are still friends and supportive of one another, which is basically the celebrity split version of saying there is no drama, please stop refreshing TikTok.

But people obviously aren’t doing that. Ariana and Ethan first met while filming Wicked she played Glinda and he played Boq. It was the kind of quick and unique paring that most Ariana fans were not expecting. But from the beginning, the conversation was never just about them getting together, although fans questioned that too. They also had a lot of interest in the timeline.

Their relationship went public in early 2023 while they were both coming out of marriages. Ariana had split from her husband Dalton Gomez, while Ethan had filed for divorce from his wife Lilly Jay, who he shared a son with less than a year earlier. The overlap, or at least the public perception of one, combined with the dramatic shift in Ethan’s life and Ariana’s own relationship history, is what made the story blow up online.

Lilly later spoke about the situation in an open letter, writing: “No one gets married thinking they’ll get divorced.” She also described dealing with the public breakdown of her marriage in the shadow of her husband’s new relationship with a celebrity. It was a line that cut through all the glossy Wicked promo and made the whole thing feel far more real.

Ariana and Ethan kept much of their relationship private after that, but the internet never really let it go quiet. Every red-carpet appearance, every supportive comment, every tiny interaction during Wicked promo seemed to come with people re-examining the same alleged timeline again.

Now that they have reportedly split, the conversation has started all over again. Fans are revisiting Lilly’s comments, old blind items are being dragged back up, and people are once again treating the relationship like a group project they were assigned three years ago and never finished.

To be clear, a messy timeline does not prove cheating, and a lot of the claims around Ariana’s dating history are still just claims. But celebrity culture in 2026 does not exactly do ‘innocent until proven otherwise’. It does screenshots, Reddit threads, TikToks with dramatic background music and people saying “wait, let me explain” before producing a 12-part investigation.

The timing is also interesting for Ariana, who has just kicked off her Eternal Sunshine tour and is preparing to release her next album, Petal, later this summer. Reports have said she is doing well and focusing on work, which makes sense.

If anyone knows how to turn public heartbreak, perception and mess into a new era, it is Ariana Grande.

Still, the reaction proves this relationship was never judged as just a relationship. It became part celebrity romance, part internet trial, part Wicked behind the scenes drama and part reminder that when a marriage, a baby and a global pop star are involved, people are never going to keep things casual.

Ariana and Ethan may be over, but the timeline discourse is very much still trying to be put together.
