Your Guide To Actually Applying SPF Properly

Plus some of our fav brands

With the sun finally making a return to Ireland, we need to protect our skin.

But with Irish weather, it’s not often we need to put on SPF and sometimes we can get it wrong.

Amelia Slattery, the CEO of Irish sun care brand Solas is here with five tips to correctly place your sun cream.

Use the Two-Finger Rule

For your face and neck, apply two full fingers of SPF, one line of product down your index finger and one down your middle finger. This ensures you’re getting the full protection listed on the bottle.

Don’t Forget the Easy-to-Miss Spots

Dermatologists consistently call these the most forgotten areas:
• Ears
• Eyelids
• Hairline
• Back of the neck
• Tops of hands
• Lips

Reapply Every Two Hours

SPF naturally breaks down on the skin due to sweat, oil, heat and UV exposure. To stay protected, reapply every two hours, and immediately after swimming or sweating.

Even Indoors, You Still Need SPF

UVA rays, the ones responsible for ageing, penetrate through windows. If you’re near a window, driving, or working in bright natural light, SPF is still essential.

Don’t Rely on Makeup with SPF

SPF in makeup is a bonus, not a replacement. You’d need far more foundation than anyone would realistically wear to reach the advertised protection.
