#MyBlogLife: Meet New Blogger On The Block Janine McBennett
When she's not blogging, she's working at Yellow Machine PR and topping up her enviable runner collection.
You only started blogging quite recently?
Yes, I just started in the last few months. It had been a long time coming! I read so many other fashion blogs and watch loads of fashion vloggers on YouTube, so I decided to give it a shot myself. I’ve been updating my Instagram on a daily basis with my outfits and style pictures, so it’s nice now with my blog to be able to write a bit more about my looks and incorporate more imagery.
Is it a difficult space to break into?
It’s definitely quite hard to be successful, building awareness can be difficult. I’ve recently started working with Yellow Machine PR and we work with a lot of bloggers and influencers, so that’s really helped.
How do you go about working up your following?
It takes quite a lot of time to build followers, I think posting on a daily basis on Instagram with good quality, unique pictures, and having an aesthetically pleasing Instagram page helps to get people interested. I know they’re the Instagram pages I’m always attracted to. I think once you showcase a unique personal style, people will follow. I always make sure to use lots of hashtags in my social posts also.
How would you describe your personal style?
Minimal and edgy, with a touch of street style. I love neutral colours and clean cuts. A good oversized top, skinny leather jeans and runners would be my go-to, but I love to add interest to my outfits through things such as my shoes, jackets and accessories. I love statement pieces; I own a gold metallic bomber which is probably my favourite thing in my wardrobe!
It seems you own A LOT of runners?!
I do! Every time I buy a new pair, I swear to myself that my collection is complete. But a week later there’s a new pair on my wishlist! I just love how they really go with everything, and add the perfect sporty and cool-casual vibe to outfits. Its great when being comfortable also makes for a great outfit!
Where are your top spots for shopping?
My favourite spots are Zara; they always have the best duplicate pieces of items straight from the runways, Cos; for the perfect minimal piece or white shirt, and Asos; I love all the different brands they stock and the Asos White collection, I could spend literally hours roaming the site. I’m also a huge fan of Urban Outfitters.
Favourite recent buy?
Definitely my white Adidas Stan Smiths. I’m finding I literally reach for them every day. They’re so versatile and I love how they’re quite a discrete trainer, compared to my Adidas Superstars – which I also love! I also bought knitted joggers in Zara recently, and I’m obsessed!
Most expensive item you’ve ever bought?
I’m not big for designer items but probably my Ray Ban sunglasses, I have three pairs and I’d love to add a few more! I have a lot of expensive items on my wish list though, the number one being a black Celine Trio Bag. It’s such a classic, and I’ve had my eye on it for so long. An All Saints leather jacket is also always up there on my list too; a good leather jacket would definitely be a great investment piece I think.
What will you be wearing this Spring/Summer?
I really love layering, all year round. Obviously it’s easier in the winter to layer jackets and scarves, but I love to do this in the slightly warmer days also, with lots of denim and vintage shirts. I’m also really loving silk embroidered bombers that are really hot for Spring ’16, I have one from Zara and it’s been such a great buy for both day and night outfits.
Favourite fashion Instagrammers?
I have SO many. A few of my favourites would be @prettysickly, @emmazoeyroche, @lissyroddyy, @weworewhat, @siomhac, @andicsinger… the list is so long! These girls all have really similar taste to my own, so I’m always finding inspiration on their pages.
You have a big night coming up and you need a new outfit, what steps do you take? Where do you get your outfit inspo?
If I’m planning for a night out, I usually always check out Asos, Missguided and Boohoo. I’m more of a playsuit or jumpsuit kind of girl, and they always have a great range for a reasonable price. Topshop is also great for dressy clothes, I love their tops and blouses, and their skinny jeans are my absolute favourite. I’m guaranteed to find something there.
