You’ll Be Put Off Eating Pick ‘N’ Mix Forever By This Grim How-It’s-Made Video
Prepare to revisit your snacking decisions.
We usually can’t resist the pick ‘n’ mix counter at the cinema, or a GIANT bag of jellies on a hangover day, but after watching this video we’re seriously reconsidering our snack choices.
Belgian filmmaker Alina Kneepkens went behind-the-scenes at a sweet manufacturing plant for Beglium’s public broadcaster VRT, and the resulting video is oh-so gruesome.

‘Gelatine’ starts off innocently enough with someone eating a handful of jelly sweets, but it then takes the manufacturing journey backwards. With no narration, the images alone are enugh to do the talking.
Yes, the weird jelly-like paste is pretty manky, as is the machine that pumps it out into skinny, spaghetti-esque stripes before reshaping it and dousing it in sugar.
And the massive steaming pot of green goo isn’t all that pleasant to look at either.
But it’s the repeeated shots of animal skins and pig carcasses that really had us reaching for the vomit bucket. As you may or may not know (though if you’re a veggie we hope you do), the gelatine in jelly sweets is generally made from the sheared off skins of animals.
Gelatin is a collagen-based protein found in the tendons, ligaments and tissues of animals, so unless your jelly sweets are specifically listed as “vegetarian” or “vegan,” that’s likely the source of their jelly-like texture.
Ew.
The production company behind the film calls it “a detailed and truthful story” about food and its origin.
Yep, it’s certainly detailed alright…
