Versace Are Suing Fashion Nova For Copying That Iconic JLo Dress
Yikes
Fashion Nova is being sued by Versace over an alleged knock off of that iconic Jennifer Lopez dress.
The notorious dress was worn by Jennifer at the Grammy awards back in 2000 and has since gone on to become synonymous with both JLo herself and the designer brand.
Earlier this year Versace reinvented the dress, giving it a modern twist, that JLo rocked at the brand’s Spring/Summer 2020 show in Milan. Which, of course, brought the dress back into style – with all of us mere mortals wanting in on that jungle print action.
Thus, que Fashion Nova, who saw it suitable to create their very own knock-off version of the dress so the everyday Joe Soap can get their grubby little mitts on. But unfortunately for us, Versace is having absolutely none of it, and Fashion Nova has since been swiftly met with court documents.
The documents which were obtained by E! News said:
“This is an action for injunctive relief and damages to redress the flagrant infringement of legendary fashion designer Versace’s iconic apparel—long protected by copyright, trademark and trade dress—by Fashion Nova, a retailer and serial infringer specializing in “fast-fashion” knock-offs,”
“The Infringing Apparel deliberately copies and imitates Versace’s most famous and recognizable designs, marks, symbols and other protected elements in violation of Versace’s exclusive registered copyrights, and in a manner that is likely to cause maximum consumer confusion.”
The document also goes on to claim that: “Since its launch in 2013, it has been sued at least eight times by other designers (such as Adidas) for the same type of copyright and trademark infringement as Versace asserts here.”
This isn’t the first time a fast-fashion brand has come under fire for selling knock-offs of designer looks, just earlier this year Kim Kardashian was awarded €2.4m in a lawsuit against Missguided while Supreme was also sued for allegedly using another brand’s print on their clothes.
At the minute how much Versace is suing the fashion chain for is unknown, while a spokesperson for Fashion Nova has also refused to comment at the time… but we’re sure all will be revealed soon.
