Pride Month – 15 LGBTQ+ Must-Watch Movies And Series On Netflix Right Now

Happy Pride everybody! We’re just over a week into pride month and whether you yourself are part of the LGBTQIA+ community or supporting a friend who is, watching these films, tv shows and documentaries will definitely be a great way to spend your free time this month.

If 2020 has taught us anything it’s just how important it is to educate ourselves and use our voices to do good. Standing together and standing up for who and what we believe is imperative to making sure everyone is treated equal and with respect.

And so, that’s why we’re spending pride month shouting about and celebrating the LGBTQ+ community. Looking for something to watch this weekend? Well say no more!

1. The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson

This Netflix documentary tells the story of Marsha P. Johnson, a transgender black woman who helped lead the fight to LGBTQ+ rights in America. Her body was pulled from the Hudson River in 1992 and her death was deemed a suicide, however those who knew her believe she was murdered.

2. Paris is Burning

For many members of the LGBTQ+ community, the Harlem ballroom dance scene was a safe haven for them. Many of them had no other family then the ones they created through the connections they made there. Through interviews, this documentary highlights the importance of these communities at the time for LGBTQ+ people.

3. Before Stonewall: The Making of Gay and a Lesbian Community

In 1969 the Stonewall riots happened and this was a massive turning point in the fight for rights for the LGBTQ+ community. This documentary looks back on the life before this and different aspects of the LGBTQ+’s progression in society’s eyes over time.

4. After Stonewall

After Stonewall is the follow on from Before Stonewall. The filmmaker produced the follow-up film which was released in 1999, detailing the thirty years that came next.

5. Blue is the Warmest Colour

Awarded the prestigious Palme d’Or at Cannes in 2013, this flick marked a significant turning point in the history of cinema and still today is an absolute must-watch. The movie follows a teenager named Adele who tries to understand her feelings for a young woman named Emma. However, when you cross growing up with sexually trying to figure out who you are, it’s never easy.

6. Sex Education

If you haven’t already seen the iconic show Sex Education (where have you been?!), there’s no better time to start watching it than pride month. The show deals with a range of very important topics such as sexuality, sex, consent and so on, but does so in a way that is not only sensitive but includes humour too.

7. The Politician

Since he was 7 years old Payton Hobart has known since he was going to be the president of the United States. Back for a second season, we continue following his story through high school. This comedy-drama will be perfect to occupy your summer evenings and with a cast including Ben Platt and Gwyneth Paltrow what else would you need?

8. Orange is the New Black

Orange is the New Black is based inside Litchfield Penitentiary, a minimum-security women’s federal prison in upstate New York. The show contains seven seasons and is based on the memoir: Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison by Piper Kerman.

9. Queer Eye

Coming back for a fifth season, the show will continue to follow Bobby Berk, Karamo Brown, Tan France, Antoni Porowski and Jonathan Van Ness as they attempt to bring new life to lucky participants. And you’re in for an extra treat, while previous seasons have only contained eight episodes, season 5 contains ten.

10. Ru Paul’s Drag Race and Ru Paul’s Drag Race All Stars

Ru Paul’s Drag Race All Stars season 5 just dropped on Netflix and they are back with another list of previous queens who are ready to get back in the limelight. Featuring the likes of Blair St. Clair, Mayhem Miller and Miz Cracker from Season 10 to Ongina and Mariah Balenciage from seasons 1 and 3. Judges include Modern Family actress Sarah Hyland, singer and choreographer Todrick Hall and Livin’ La Vida Loca singer Ricky Martin.

11. Schitt’s Creek

Following the story of a married couple, and two spoilt children who suddenly find themselves bankrupt, Schitt’s Creek is bound to make you laugh. With a star studded cast including Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara, this light-hearted series will be your next binge watch.

12. Cheer

Cheer is a six part American docu-series that follows the nationally ranked 40-member Navarro College Bulldogs Cheer Team from Corsicana, Texas. The episodes focus especially on five individual Cheer Team members.

13. Feel Good

Feel Good follows the life of Mae, a recovering addict and comedian, as she tries to control the addictive behaviours and intense romanticism. However, all doesn’t go to plan when she finds her new girlfriend, George.

14. POSE

This American series is based on the New York City’s African-American and Latino LGBTQ+ ballroom culture scene in the 1980s and in the early 1990s. In 2019, Billy Porter who plays Pray Tell, was awarded the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series – the first openly gay black man to be nominated for and win in an Emmy lead acting category.

15. EastSiders

Eastsiders is a dark comedy that follows the lives of a gay couple, Thom and Cal as they struggle with infidelity and substance abuse. With four seasons in total this one is sure to keep you busy for the next few weeks.
