Finished Bridgerton? Here’s 5 More Period Dramas To Watch Now On Netflix
Our top picks to fill that Bridgerton shaped hole in your evening TV watching.
Since January is another month we’re going to be spending mostly inside, we’re watching a lot of TV right now. One of the most popular shows so far in 2021 has been Bridgerton. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, it’s as if Pride and Prejudice and Gossip Girl combined to make the perfect show.
That formula is clearly working for the show as Netflix has ranked it one of the top five most popular shows they’ve released, and it has been watched by 65 million households worldwide.
If you haven’t watched it yet, get on it ASAP, we promise you will not regret it. Or perhaps, like us, you binge watched it in a couple of days then you’re probably on the hunt for something new to watch.
Luckily for us the streaming service has lots of other period dramas to choose from that can fill that Bridgerton shaped hole in your evening TV watching.
It’s like Netflix knew we’d all be looking for more period dramas, as they re-uploaded the Joe Wright Pride & Prej last week for our viewing pleasure.
As much as we love the original series, this updated version is our personal favourite.
Featuring Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Bennet and Matthew McFadden as Mr Darcy, it’s the perfect adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic novel.
Mary Queen of Scots (2018)
This film was a huge hit when it was released back in 2018 and has now found it’s way to Netflix.
Starring Saoirse Ronan in the title role of Mary Stuart and Margot Robbie as a very insecure Queen Elizabeth, it’s got everything; incredible costumes, romance, betrayal and drama.
Curl up on the sofa and watch it now!
Ophelia (2018)
Another one that has only been on Netflix for a few months is Ophelia. The story is loosely based on William Shakespeare’s play, Hamlet.
However, unlike the Shakespeare version, this follows the events of the play from the perspective of Ophelia, played by Daisy Ridley.
It’s got everything you’d expect including romance, tragedy, as well as incredible sets and costumes.
The Other Boleyn Girl (2008)
Another drama that tells a well known story from a female perspective, is this historical drama follows Anne Boleyn as she sets out to make Henry VIII her husband.
It’s loosely based on the real life of the tragic queen and sees sister pitted against sister played by Natalie Portman and Scarlet Johansson.
Pride and Prejudice (1995)
If it’s a series you’re after, then the 2005 film version isn’t quite going to cut it really, so why not watch the series instead?
There’s six fifty minute episodes to sink your teeth into here, and we have to admit Colin Firth does make for the most iconic Mr Darcy hands down.
With more time than a movie to dive into Jane Austen’s novel, it’s a much watch for fans of the book.
